Jupiter is the fourth movement of The Planets, an orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst. Its subtitle is 'the Bringer of Jollity'. Bright, lively tunes bounce in one after another, like a festival. Then, in the middle, a broad and moving melody is sung out grandly.
Holst wrote The Planets between 1914 and 1916. Each planet is based not on astronomy but on the character given to it in astrology. Jupiter is the planet that brings cheerful, generous joy. The middle melody was later named 'Thaxted', after the village where Holst lived.
(I Vow to Thee, My Country)」が生まれました。 In 1921 Holst set a poem to this melody, creating the patriotic hymn 'I Vow to Thee, My Country'. In 1991 it was also used for 'World in Union', the theme song of the Rugby World Cup. In Japan, Ayaka Hirahara's 2003 song 'Jupiter', which put Japanese words to the melody, became a huge hit.
Jupiter is one part of a big piece called The Planets. The music is happy and full of energy. In the middle, there is a slow and beautiful melody. In England, people sing this melody in a famous song. In Japan, a singer made it into a hit song, too.「木星」は、「惑星」という大きな曲の一部です。

'I Vow to Thee, My Country', made from the middle melody, is known as a hymn Princess Diana loved. It was sung both at her wedding in 1981 and at her funeral in 1997. For many people in Britain, it is a song tied to special memories.
Holst was very interested in astrology, and The Planets is about the characters that astrology gives the planets, not about the science of space. That is why Jupiter is 'the Bringer of Jollity' and Mars is 'the Bringer of War'.
For the 1991 Rugby World Cup, new words were set to this melody to create the theme song 'World in Union'. It has been sung at later tournaments too, so the melody is also familiar to rugby fans.
In 2003, Ayaka Hirahara released her debut song 'Jupiter', with Japanese words set to this melody, and it became a huge hit. It is a famous example of a British classical piece from almost 100 years earlier reaching many hearts as J-pop.
