Beautiful Dreamer' is a song by the American composer Stephen Foster. In it, a singer calls softly to a sleeping loved one: 'Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me.' It is a serenade, a song sung at night for someone you love. The music sways gently in groups of three beats, and the piano plays a rolling accompaniment like small waves. In Japan, it is also known as 'Yumeji yori'.
Foster lived at a time with no records or radio. He was one of the first Americans who tried to make a living just by writing songs and selling sheet music. He wrote many hits, but he never had much money, and his last years in New York were very hard. This song comes from that time, and Foster wrote both the words and the music.
Foster died in January 1864 at the age of 37, and this song was published two months later, in March. The cover said it was the last song he ever wrote, just a few days before his death. But the first edition shows a copyright date of 1862, so it may have been ready about two years earlier. Since then, many singers, such as Bing Crosby and Roy Orbison, have recorded it, and it has been used in films.
This is a song by Stephen Foster from America. A singer sings to a person who is sleeping. The singer says, 'Wake up, beautiful dreamer!' The music is soft and slow, like a lullaby. The song came out after Foster died.

The publisher advertised it as the last song Foster wrote, a few days before he died. But the first edition shows a copyright date of 1862. Also, about 20 other songs have been called 'Foster's last song', so nobody knows which one really was. The claim may have been just a way to sell copies.
In the 1949 film Mighty Joe Young, this song is used again and again to calm Joe, a giant gorilla. In the story, Joe becomes calm when he hears it. The gentle tune is an important key to the plot.
In E. B. White's children's book The Trumpet of the Swan (1970), Louis, a swan who cannot make a sound, learns to play the trumpet and plays this tune. In an important scene, Louis plays it for Serena, the swan he loves. White is also famous for Charlotte's Web.
In Foster's time, songs spread through sheet music. People bought the music and sang it at home around the piano. Songs like this one were called 'parlor songs'. They were made for families and friends to enjoy at home, so they were gentle and easy to sing.
