パヴァーヌ 嬰ヘ短調

フォーレの「パヴァーヌ」は、1887年に書かれたオーケストラのための曲です。弦楽器がピツィカート（指で弦をはじく弾き方）で静かにリズムをきざむ上で、フルートが少しさびしげで上品なメロディーを歌います。パヴァーヌとは、ルネサンス時代の宮廷で踊られた、ゆっくりとした行列のような踊りのことです。Fauré's Pavane is a piece for orchestra written in 1887. Over strings quietly plucking a rhythm with their fingers (pizzicato), a flute sings a slightly sad, elegant melody. A pavane is a slow, procession-like dance from the royal courts of the Renaissance.

Fauré dedicated it to Countess Élisabeth Greffulhe, a star of Paris high society. At her suggestion, he added a chorus with words by her cousin, the poet Robert de Montesquiou. The words lightly describe the little games that lovers play.

Fauré is reported to have described it as 'elegant, but not otherwise important'. Today, though, it is one of his best-loved works around the world. During the 1998 football World Cup, the BBC in Britain used it as the theme music for its TV coverage.
