The Story

The Serenade for Strings in E minor is a piece for string orchestra that Elgar wrote in March 1892. It has three movements and lasts only about a quarter of an hour. It moves from a gently rocking rhythm to a dreamy song, and then to a quiet ending, full of warm feelings.

Elgar wrote it for his wife, Alice, as a present for their third wedding anniversary that year. At that time, Elgar was still unknown and made a living by teaching the violin while he composed. The work is dedicated to Edward Whinfield, an organ builder who had encouraged him. The long, flowing melody of the second movement is especially famous for its beauty.

It was first played privately in 1892 by the Worcester Ladies' Orchestral Class, with Elgar conducting. One publisher turned it down, saying it was very good but would not sell. Its first public performance was in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1896. Today it is one of Elgar's most recorded works and is very popular with student and amateur orchestras.

When Elgar sent the piece to a publisher, he was told it was very good, but that this kind of music was practically unsaleable. He found a publisher only in 1893. Today it is played all over the world, so that publisher was completely wrong.

In a letter to a friend, Elgar wrote that he liked the piece, calling it 'the first thing I ever did.' He had written music before, but this was the first work he was truly happy with.

The first public performance was in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1896. The complete work was not played publicly in Britain until 1899, in York. It is an English piece, but another country heard it first!

The gently rocking 6/8 rhythm of the first movement has been described by experts as a cradle song, and also as a morning song. To some it sounds like dawn, and to others like a rocking cradle. That is part of its magic.
