Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor is a work for cello and orchestra, completed in 1919, just after the end of the First World War. It opens with strong chords on the cello, and a feeling of deep sadness and remembering runs through the whole piece. It is one of Elgar's last major works.
In 1918, Elgar had his tonsils removed in London. It is said that on the night he returned home, he wrote down the melody that became the concerto's first theme. Much of the work was written at Brinkwells, a small cottage in the woods of Sussex in southern England. Many people hear in it his feelings about a world changed by war.
The premiere in October 1919 went badly because there was not enough rehearsal time. The concerto slowly gained supporters, and the famous 1965 recording by the 20-year-old cellist Jacqueline du Pré, with the conductor John Barbirolli, brought it to many more listeners. Today it is one of the most important cello concertos.
This is a sad and beautiful piece for cello. The composer wrote it after a big war. Its first performance went badly. Later, a young cellist made a famous recording of it. Now many people love it.

At the premiere concert, Albert Coates, who conducted the other pieces on the program, went over his rehearsal time, so Elgar had less time to practice. Elgar's wife, Alice, wrote angrily about Coates.
In 1965, Jacqueline du Pré recorded the concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra and John Barbirolli, and the record became a sensation. When she came back from a break during the session, she found that many musicians and critics had come to listen.
Elgar was very interested in recording. With the cellist Beatrice Harrison, he recorded a shortened version in 1920 and the complete concerto in 1928, conducting it himself. We can still hear the composer's own ideas.
In 1920, the year after the concerto was finished, Elgar's wife Alice died. Elgar lived on, but he completed very few large works after that. That is why this concerto is sometimes heard as the composer's last great confession.
