This is the eighth of the twelve pieces in Debussy's first book of Préludes. A slow, gentle melody quietly paints a picture of a girl with light, golden hair. It is short and simple, but its warm sound touches the heart, and it is one of Debussy's best-loved piano pieces.
The title comes from a poem by the French poet Leconte de Lisle. In the Préludes, Debussy wrote each title not at the beginning but at the end of the piece, in small letters with three dots. The melody often uses a five-note scale, like the scales in many folk songs, including Japanese ones, which gives it a familiar, nostalgic sound.
The first book of Préludes was published in 1910, and the second book followed in 1913, making 24 pieces in all. Among them, 'The Girl with the Flaxen Hair' is especially popular with piano students, partly because it is not too difficult. It has been arranged for violin, guitar, and other instruments, and is loved in many forms.
This is a short and gentle piano piece. It is a picture of a girl with light, golden hair. The music is soft and warm. Debussy wrote the title at the end of the music, not at the beginning.

In the score of the Préludes, each title is printed at the end of the piece, in brackets with three dots. You feel the music first, then learn the title. Perhaps Debussy did not want players and listeners to be tied down by the title.
In Japan there is a pop song with the same title. It was a hit for the Village Singers in 1968, and Hitomi Shimatani's cover became popular in 2002. But its melody is completely different from Debussy's. Only the title is the same!
Leconte de Lisle's poem is one of six 'Scottish Songs' in his collection Poèmes antiques. As a young man, Debussy had already set this poem as a song. About 30 years later, he painted it again, this time as a piano piece without words.
The piece is in G-flat major, a key that uses many black keys. If you play only the black keys on a piano, you get a five-note scale. This choice of key is part of the secret of its soft, round sound.
