This is the first of Debussy's Two Arabesques, written when he was in his twenties. Flowing, sparkling notes run through the piece and put you in a gentle, bright mood. It is popular with piano students and is often played as a first step into Debussy's music. Its harp-like waves of notes may remind you of spring light or a little stream.
An arabesque is a decorative pattern of curving lines, like twisting vines, often seen in Islamic art and architecture. Debussy wrote music in which lines of notes curl and wind around each other like that pattern. In some places, one hand plays groups of three notes while the other plays groups of two, which creates a floating feeling.
The piece was published in 1891. At that time Debussy was not yet famous, and you don't hear as many of the new sounds of his later works like La mer. Still, its swaying chords and flowing notes already show the seeds of his later style. Today it is played not only on piano but also on harp, guitar, and other instruments.
This is a light and pretty piano piece. An arabesque is a pattern of curving lines. The music flows like a river. Debussy was a young man when he wrote it. Many piano students love to play it.

In parts of this piece, one hand plays three notes while the other plays two in the same amount of time. This is called 'three against two,' and it is tricky for piano students. But when it goes well, the music seems to float.
Arabesques are vine-like patterns of curves found on the walls of mosques and palaces. Debussy is said to have written that Bach's music also has beautiful 'arabesques.' He loved the beauty of musical lines winding together.
In 1974, Japanese musician Isao Tomita released an album of Debussy's music played on synthesizers, and it became a worldwide sensation. 'Arabesque No. 1' was on the album, showing a new side of the piece in electronic sound.
Debussy won the Prix de Rome in 1884, studied in Rome, and returned to Paris in 1887. When this piece was published in 1891, he was still a young composer who was not well known, and it is said that life was not easy for him.
