The Story

This intermezzo is No. 2 of Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, which Brahms wrote in 1893, when he was about 60. The word "intermezzo" usually means music played between other things, but Brahms used it as a name for many of his short late piano pieces. Its warm, slightly lonely melody seems to speak quietly to the listener.

In his last years, Brahms wrote several sets of short piano pieces, from Op. 116 to Op. 119. Unlike his big symphonies, this music feels like something told quietly to a close friend. This piece has three parts: gentle music in A major at the beginning and end, and a shadowy section in a minor key in the middle.

Op. 118 was dedicated to Clara Schumann, the pianist who had been Brahms's dear friend for many years. Clara died in 1896, and Brahms died the following year. Today this is one of his best-loved piano pieces, and many pianists play it in recitals and as an encore.

This is a slow and gentle piano piece. The composer was about sixty years old. It is part of a set he dedicated to his longtime friend Clara, a great pianist. The music sounds warm and a little sad.

Listening Guide

Listen to how the first melody begins, almost hesitating, as if starting to speak. It is played slowly and with feeling.
In the middle, the key turns minor and the mood darkens. Try to hear two melodies following each other.
At the end, the first melody returns and the piece fades away gently. Enjoy the silence after the last note.

Around 1890, after writing his second String Quintet, Brahms told friends he planned to stop composing. But he was so moved by the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld's playing that his desire to write came back. His late sets of piano pieces were born in this new period.

At 20, Brahms met Robert and Clara Schumann, who saw his great talent. After Robert's death, Brahms stayed close to Clara for the rest of his life. He often showed her his new works first and asked her opinion. Dedicating this set to her shows how deep their bond was.

In the shadowy middle section, Brahms uses canon, where one voice follows another with the same melody, like a chase. The piece sounds simple and gentle, but it hides the careful craft of a composer who studied Bach deeply.

Brahms is said to have called the Three Intermezzos, Op. 117, written just before this set, "lullabies of my sorrows." The intermezzo in Op. 118 has the same quiet feeling of looking back on life.
