Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major was written by Beethoven in 1806. It begins with a mysterious slow introduction, like feeling your way through fog, and then suddenly bursts into bright, light music. Standing between the powerful 'Eroica' (No. 3) and the Fifth, it has a clear, sunny and relaxed charm.
In summer and autumn 1806, Beethoven stayed at the Silesian estate of his patron, Prince Lichnowsky. There he met Count Franz von Oppersdorff, who had his own orchestra. This symphony is dedicated to the count. Beethoven had already started sketches for the Fifth Symphony, but he is said to have finished this Fourth Symphony first.
The premiere was in March 1807, at a private concert for invited guests in Prince Lobkowitz's palace in Vienna. The famous image of 'a slender Greek maiden between two Norse giants' has long been credited to Robert Schumann, but some scholars doubt that he really said it. Even today it is not as famous as the Third or Fifth, but many conductors and musicians love it especially.
This is Beethoven's fourth symphony. It starts slowly and quietly, like a walk in the fog. Then it becomes bright and fast. It is not as famous as his Fifth Symphony. But many musicians love it very much.

This symphony is often pictured as a slender Greek maiden standing between two Norse giants, the Third and Fifth Symphonies. The image has long been credited to Schumann, but it may have spread through a later retelling by the English writer George Grove. It nicely captures how bright and light this symphony is compared to the two heavy works around it.
Beethoven had begun sketching his Fifth Symphony before 1806. But he is said to have finished this Fourth Symphony first, while he was still working on the Fifth. The two works overlapped, so their numbers do not show the order in which he started them.
Count Oppersdorff, who received the dedication, loved music so much that he had his own orchestra. He ordered a symphony from Beethoven and paid for it. He is said to have hoped for the next symphony too, but the Fifth was dedicated to other people.
In the middle of the first movement, the music grows quiet while the timpani rumble softly beneath it. The sound slowly gets louder until the main theme bursts back in. Giving the drums such an important role was a new idea at the time.
