This prelude is the very first piece in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. The book has one prelude and fugue in each of the 24 major and minor keys, starting with C major. This prelude is very simple: it repeats the same pattern of broken chords, playing the notes of each chord one by one, through almost the whole piece.
Book 1 was completed in 1722, and its title page says it was written for young musicians who want to learn. 'Well-tempered' means tuning a keyboard so that music can be played in all 24 keys. But it was not necessarily the same tuning used on modern pianos. At that time it was played on the harpsichord or clavichord. An early version of this prelude also appears in a music book Bach made for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann.
In 1853, the French composer Charles Gounod used this prelude as an accompaniment and wrote a new melody on top of it. Later, the words of a Latin prayer were added, and it became the famous 'Bach-Gounod Ave Maria.' The whole collection is treasured as a kind of 'bible' of keyboard music, studied by Chopin and many other musicians.
This piece is very simple. The right hand and the left hand play broken chords. The same pattern goes on and on. But it sounds beautiful! Later, another composer put a new song on top of it.

The German title word 'wohltemperiert' means 'well-tuned.' It does not necessarily mean equal temperament, the tuning of modern pianos where every half step is the same size. Scholars still debate what kind of tuning Bach really had in mind.
Many 19th-century editions included an extra bar in the middle that Bach never wrote. It is said that a musician named Schwencke added it because he thought one chord change was too sudden. Gounod's Ave Maria is also said to be based on the version with this extra bar.
The 19th-century pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow is said to have called Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier the 'Old Testament' and Beethoven's piano sonatas the 'New Testament.' It shows how important this music is for anyone learning the piano.
Chopin deeply admired Bach, and it is said that he played Bach to prepare before his concerts. His 24 Preludes, which use all the major and minor keys, are thought to follow the model of Bach's collection. Across the ages, Bach's book has been a teacher to composers.
