Giacomo Puccini was born in 1858 in Lucca, in central Italy, into a family that had served the town's churches as musicians for generations. His father died when he was five, and the family pinned their hopes on him. As a teenager, the story goes, he walked all the way to Pisa to see Verdi's opera Aida and decided there and then to become an opera composer.
He studied at the Milan Conservatory, where he shared lodgings with Pietro Mascagni, the future composer of Cavalleria rusticana. Success came with Manon Lescaut in 1893, followed by La bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904), all still performed around the world. The premiere of La bohème was conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini.

In private life he loved cars, motorboats and hunting, and in 1903 he broke his leg in a car accident.
By the time La fanciulla del West premiered in New York in 1910, he was an international star.
