Gustav Mahler was born in 1860 into a Jewish family in Kaliště, a small village in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. He was the second of fourteen children, many of whom died young. The family soon moved to the town of Iglau, today's Jihlava. A gifted pianist, he gave his first public performance at ten and entered the Vienna Conservatory at fifteen.
In his lifetime, Mahler was more famous as a conductor than as a composer. He sharpened his skills at opera houses in cities such as Budapest and Hamburg, and in 1897 he became director of the Vienna Court Opera, today's Vienna State Opera. The opera season kept him busy conducting, so he composed mainly in the summer holidays, shut away in small composing huts by lakes in the countryside.
In 1902 he married Alma Schindler, who was nineteen years younger, and they had two daughters. But 1907 brought heavy blows. He left the Vienna Opera, his elder daughter Maria died of illness, and he himself was diagnosed with a heart condition. He then crossed the Atlantic to conduct at the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.
He completed nine numbered symphonies, plus Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony for voices and orchestra. The 1910 premiere of his Eighth Symphony in Munich, with more than a thousand performers, was a triumph. But he died in Vienna in 1911, aged fifty, while still working on his Tenth. His music was rediscovered after his death and is now a cornerstone of orchestras everywhere.
Gustav Mahler was born in Bohemia. He was a great conductor in Vienna. In summer, he wrote music in a small hut by a lake. His symphonies are very long and very big. More than a thousand people took part in the first performance of one symphony!

In the third movement of the First Symphony, the tune of 'Frère Jacques', known in Japan as the hand-game song 'Gu Choki Pa', appears slowly in a dark minor key. It sounds like a strange, gloomy funeral march.
The nickname 'Symphony of a Thousand' for the Eighth was invented not by Mahler but by the promoter who organized its premiere. Still, more than a thousand singers and players really did take part in the 1910 first performance.
Beethoven and Bruckner both died after writing a Ninth Symphony. The story goes that Mahler, worried by this, gave his ninth symphonic work a title, The Song of the Earth, instead of a number. He then wrote a Ninth anyway, and died leaving the Tenth unfinished.
The finale of the Sixth Symphony calls for a huge wooden hammer to be brought down with a thunderous blow. At first the score had three hammer strokes, but Mahler later removed the third. People still argue about why.
In 1910, troubled in his personal life, Mahler met Sigmund Freud in Leiden in the Netherlands. They are said to have talked for about four hours while walking around the town, a rare meeting of a great composer and a pioneer of the mind.
The words of The Song of the Earth come from free German versions of poems by Tang-dynasty Chinese poets such as Li Bai. It brings the world of Eastern poetry to life with a large Western orchestra.
