O soave fanciulla is the duet that ends Act 1 of La bohème, an opera by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. The opera was first performed on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini. In this scene, the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì, who have just met, fall in love.
The story comes from Scenes of Bohemian Life by the French writer Henri Murger. It takes place in a cold attic in Paris on Christmas Eve. Rodolfo and Mimì each introduce themselves in the arias Che gelida manina and Sì, mi chiamano Mimì, and then they join their hearts in this duet. In the moonlight, their voices slowly come together.
At the end of the duet, the two leave the room to join their friends at a café, singing 'Amor!' (love) from offstage. The soprano ends on a high C, and many tenors sing the same high note with her. La bohème is still one of the most often performed operas in the world, and it inspired the musical Rent.
This is a love song for two people. A poor poet meets a young woman. They meet on Christmas Eve in Paris. They fall in love very fast. At the end, they sing 'Love!' and walk away.

On the final 'Amor', the soprano sings a high C. The tenor part is written lower, but many tenors take the high C together with the soprano. It has become a tradition. Whether to sing it as written or go high is a big choice for every tenor.
The composer Ruggero Leoncavallo was also writing a La bohème from the same book. The two composers are said to have argued over who started first. Leoncavallo's version opened in 1897, but today Puccini's is far more famous.
The premiere was conducted by Arturo Toscanini, later called one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was still in his twenties. Newspaper reviews were mixed, but the opera quickly won the hearts of audiences.
The musical Rent, which opened in New York in 1996, is based on La bohème but moves the story to modern New York. Even after 100 years, this tale of poor young people, love and friendship still touches people's hearts.
