The Story

The Humming Chorus is a wordless chorus from Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly. It is sung offstage by singers with their mouths closed. The opera is set in Nagasaki in the Meiji era. It tells the story of Cio-Cio-San, called Butterfly, who marries Pinkerton, an American navy officer, and keeps waiting for him after he leaves.

After three years of waiting, Butterfly sees her husband's ship come into the harbor. She fills the room with flowers and waits all night with her maid Suzuki and her little child. Suzuki and the child fall asleep, but Butterfly stays awake. A soft humming from far away gently wraps around that quiet night.

The opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan in February 1904, and it was one of the biggest flops in opera history. Puccini revised it, for example by splitting the long second act into two. When it was performed in Brescia that May, it was a great success. The Humming Chorus became the bridge into the new third act.

This is a song with no words. The singers hum with their mouths closed. A woman waits for her husband all night. Her husband's ship is in the harbor. The quiet music fills the long night.

The premiere at La Scala on 17 February 1904 is one of the most famous flops in opera history. It is said that there was too little rehearsal time because the opera was finished late, and that the second act was very long. Puccini quickly revised it, and three months later in Brescia it was a big success.

Puccini studied Japanese music carefully. He is said to have learned about Japanese songs from Ōyama Hisako, the wife of Japan's minister to Italy. Melodies such as Kimigayo, Sakura Sakura and Miya-san Miya-san appear in the opera.

In the summer of 1900, Puccini saw David Belasco's play Madame Butterfly in London. He is said to have understood little English, but the story moved him, and he decided to turn it into an opera.
