There was once a forester who went into the forest to hunt, and as he entered it he heard a sound of screaming as if a little child were there. He followed the sound, and at last came to a high tree, and at the top of this a little child was sitting, for the mother had fallen asleep under the tree with the child, and a bird of prey had seen it in her arms, had flown down, snatched it away, and set it on the high tree.
むかし、一人の森番が、狩りをしに森へ出かけました。森に入っていくと、小さな子どもが泣き叫んでいるような声が聞こえてきました。声のするほうへ行ってみると、やがて一本の高い木のところに出ました。見ると、そのてっぺんに、小さな子どもが一人座っていました。母親が子どもを抱いたまま、その木の下で眠りこんでしまったところへ、一羽のもうきん（ワシやタカのなかま）が、母親の腕の中の子どもを見つけたのです。もうきんは舞い降りて子どもをさらい、その高い木の上に置いていったのでした。
The forester climbed up, brought the child down, and thought to himself, "Thou wilt take him home with thee, and bring him up with thy Lina." He took it home, therefore, and the two children grew up together. The one, however, which he had found on a tree was called Fundevogel, because a bird had carried it away. Fundevogel and Lina loved each other so dearly that when they did not see each other they were sad.
森番は木に登って子どもを下ろしてやり、心の中で思いました。「この子を家へ連れて帰って、うちのリーナと一緒に育ててやろう」こうして森番が子どもを家へ連れて帰ったので、二人の子どもは一緒に大きくなりました。木の上で見つけたほうの子は、鳥が連れていった子なので、「めっけ鳥」と名づけられました。めっけ鳥とリーナはとても仲よしで、お互いの顔が見えないと悲しくなるほどでした。
The forester, however, had an old cook, who one evening took two pails and began to fetch water, and did not go once only, but many times, out to the spring. Lina saw this and said, "Hark you, old Sanna, why are you fetching so much water?" "If thou wilt never repeat it to anyone, I will tell thee why." So Lina said, no, she would never repeat it to anyone, and then the cook said, "Early to-morrow morning, when the forester is out hunting, I will heat the water, and when it is boiling in the kettle, I will throw in Fundevogel, and will boil him in it."
ところで、森番の家には年取った料理番の女がいました。ある晩、料理番はバケツを二つ持って水をくみ始め、一度だけでなく、何度も何度も泉へ出かけていきました。リーナはそれを見て言いました。「ねえ、サンナばあや、どうしてそんなにたくさん水をくんでいるの？」「誰にも言わないと約束するなら、わけを教えてあげるよ」そこでリーナが、誰にも絶対に言わないと答えると、料理番は言いました。「あしたの朝早く、森番さんが狩りに出かけている間に、この水を沸かすんだ。大なべの中でぐらぐら煮え立ったら、めっけ鳥を放りこんで、ゆでてしまうのさ」
Betimes next morning the forester got up and went out hunting, and when he was gone the children were still in bed. Then Lina said to Fundevogel, "If thou wilt never leave me, I too will never leave thee." Fundevogel said, "Neither now, nor ever will I leave thee." Then said Lina, "Then I will tell thee. Last night, old Sanna carried so many buckets of water into the house that I asked her why she was doing that, and she said that if I would promise not to tell any one she would tell me, and I said I would be sure not to tell any one, and she said that early to-morrow morning when father was out hunting, she would set the kettle full of water, throw thee into it and boil thee; but we will get up quickly, dress ourselves, and go away together."
次の朝早く、森番は起きて狩りに出かけていきました。森番が出かけたとき、子どもたちはまだ寝床にいました。リーナはめっけ鳥に言いました。「あなたがわたしを決して見捨てないなら、わたしもあなたを決して見捨てないわ」めっけ鳥は言いました。「今だって、これからだって、決してきみを見捨てたりしないよ」そこでリーナは言いました。「それじゃ、話してあげる。ゆうべ、サンナばあやが家の中へバケツで何杯も何杯も水を運んでいたの。だから、どうしてそんなことをするのってきいたの。そうしたら、誰にも言わないと約束するなら教えてあげるって言うから、わたし、絶対に誰にも言わないって言ったの。そうしたらばあやは、あしたの朝早く、お父さんが狩りに出かけている間に、大なべいっぱいに水を沸かして、あなたを放りこんでゆでてしまうって言ったのよ。でも、急いで起きて服を着て、一緒に逃げましょう」
The two children therefore got up, dressed themselves quickly, and went away. When the water in the kettle was boiling, the cook went into the bed-room to fetch Fundevogel and throw him into it. But when she came in, and went to the beds, both the children were gone. Then she was terribly alarmed, and she said to herself, "What shall I say now when the forester comes home and sees that the children are gone? They must be followed instantly to get them back again."
そこで二人の子どもは起き上がり、急いで服を着て、出ていきました。大なべのお湯がぐらぐら煮え立つと、料理番は、めっけ鳥を連れてきてお湯に放りこもうと、寝室に入っていきました。ところが、中に入って寝床のところへ行ってみると、子どもは二人ともいなくなっていました。料理番はひどく慌てて、ひとりごとを言いました。「森番さんが帰ってきて、子どもたちがいなくなっているのを見たら、なんと言いわけしたらいいんだろう？すぐに追いかけて、連れ戻さなくちゃ」
Then the cook sent three servants after them, who were to run and overtake the children. The children, however, were sitting outside the forest, and when they saw from afar the three servants running, Lina said to Fundevogel, "Never leave me, and I will never leave thee." Fundevogel said, "Neither now, nor ever." Then said Lina, "Do thou become a rose-tree, and I the rose upon it." When the three servants came to the forest, nothing was there but a rose-tree and one rose on it, but the children were nowhere. Then said they, "There is nothing to be done here," and they went home and told the cook that they had seen nothing in the forest but a little rose-bush with one rose on it. Then the old cook scolded and said, "You simpletons, you should have cut the rose-bush in two, and have broken off the rose and brought it home with you; go, and do it once."
そこで料理番は三人の召使いに、子どもたちを走って追いかけ、捕まえてくるように言いつけました。子どもたちは森の外に座っていましたが、遠くから三人の召使いが走ってくるのが見えると、リーナはめっけ鳥に言いました。「わたしを見捨てないで。そうしたら、わたしもあなたを見捨てないわ」めっけ鳥は言いました。「今だって、これからだって、決して」そこでリーナは言いました。「あなたはバラの木になって。わたしはその木に咲くバラの花になるわ」三人の召使いが森に来てみると、そこにはバラの木が一本あって、花が一つ咲いているだけで、子どもたちはどこにもいませんでした。三人は「ここではどうしようもない」と言って家へ帰り、森の中には小さなバラの木が一本あって、花が一つ咲いているだけでした、と料理番に話しました。すると年取った料理番は叱りつけました。「このまぬけども！そのバラの木を真っ二つに切って、花を折って、持って帰ってくればよかったんだよ。さあ、今すぐ行って、そうしておいで」
They had therefore to go out and look for the second time. The children, however, saw them coming from a distance. Then Lina said, "Fundevogel, never leave me, and I will never leave thee." Fundevogel said, "Neither now, nor ever." Said Lina, "Then do thou become a church, and I'll be the chandelier in it." So when the three servants came, nothing was there but a church, with a chandelier in it. They said therefore to each other, "What can we do here, let us go home." When they got home, the cook asked if they had not found them; so they said no, they had found nothing but a church, and that there was a chandelier in it. And the cook scolded them and said, "You fools! why did you not pull the church to pieces, and bring the chandelier home with you?"
そこで三人は、もう一度探しに出かけなければなりませんでした。けれども子どもたちは、三人がやって来るのを遠くから見つけました。リーナは言いました。「めっけ鳥、わたしを見捨てないで。そうしたら、わたしもあなたを見捨てないわ」めっけ鳥は言いました。「今だって、これからだって、決して」リーナは言いました。「それじゃあ、あなたは教会になって。わたしはその中のシャンデリアになるわ」そこで三人の召使いが来てみると、そこには教会が一つあって、中にシャンデリアが下がっているだけでした。三人はお互いに言いました。「ここで何ができるっていうんだ。家へ帰ろう」家に帰ると、料理番は、子どもたちを見つけなかったのかと尋ねました。三人は、いいえ、見つけたのは教会だけで、中にシャンデリアが一つ下がっていました、と答えました。すると料理番は三人を叱りつけました。「このばかどもが！どうして教会をたたき壊して、シャンデリアを持って帰ってこなかったんだい？」
And now the old cook herself got on her legs, and went with the three servants in pursuit of the children. The children, however, saw from afar that the three servants were coming, and the cook waddling after them. Then said Lina, "Fundevogel, never leave me, and I will never leave thee." Then said Fundevogel, "Neither now, nor ever." Said Lina, "Be a fishpond, and I will be the duck upon it." The cook, however, came up to them, and when she saw the pond she lay down by it, and was about to drink it up. But the duck swam quickly to her, seized her head in its beak and drew her into the water, and there the old witch had to drown. Then the children went home together, and were heartily delighted, and if they are not dead, they are living still.
そこで今度は、年取った料理番が自分で重い腰を上げ、三人の召使いと一緒に子どもたちを追いかけていきました。けれども子どもたちは、三人の召使いがやって来て、そのあとから料理番がよたよたついてくるのを、遠くから見つけました。リーナは言いました。「めっけ鳥、わたしを見捨てないで。そうしたら、わたしもあなたを見捨てないわ」すると、めっけ鳥は言いました。「今だって、これからだって、決して」リーナは言いました。「あなたは池になって。わたしはその池に浮かぶカモになるわ」さて、料理番はそばまでやって来て池を見ると、そのほとりに腹ばいになって、池の水を飲み干そうとしました。ところが、カモがすばやく泳いできて、くちばしで料理番の頭をくわえ、水の中へ引きこみました。こうして、年取った魔女はおぼれてしまいました。それから子どもたちは一緒に家へ帰り、心から喜びました。二人がまだ死んでいなければ、今も元気に暮らしていることでしょう。
