Is it worth bringing samples back from asteroids, rather than only studying them with spacecraft?

I think sample-return missions are definitely worth the effort. The main advantage is that laboratories on Earth are far more powerful than any instrument a spacecraft can carry. Scientists can use huge machines, test samples in many different ways, and check each other's results. Thanks to Japan's Hayabusa2, which returned material from the asteroid Ryugu in 2020, researchers found amino acids, which are building blocks of life. NASA's OSIRIS-REx brought back samples from Bennu in 2023, and similar organic compounds have been found in them. A second advantage is that returned samples can be kept for the future. Some rocks collected during the Apollo missions were stored unopened for about fifty years so that scientists could study them with better technology. In the same way, asteroid samples will continue to produce discoveries for decades. For these reasons, bringing samples home is a valuable approach to space science.

Yes, I think it is worth it. First, labs on Earth have much better machines than a small spacecraft. Scientists found materials for life in samples from Ryugu, brought back by Hayabusa2. Second, samples can be kept for a long time. Some Apollo moon rocks were opened after about fifty years. In the future, scientists can study them again with new technology. So sample return is very useful.

  • Sample-return missions are complicated and risky, and a single failure during landing or return can waste years of work.
  • Remote observation by orbiting spacecraft and landers can study many more places at a lower cost than bringing material home.
