英語の thrill(スリル、ぞくぞくさせる)は、nostril(鼻の穴)と語源がつながっている
辞書によると、どちらも古英語の thyrel(穴)にさかのぼる。thrill は、そこからできた「突き通す」という意味の動詞が変化した語。

nostril は古英語の「鼻+穴」。この「穴」の語から生まれた動詞が thrill になった。nightingale や garlic にも、今は単独で使われない古い部品が残る。
ひとことで言うと鼻の穴 nostril の後ろ半分は「穴」。thrill も同じ「穴」生まれ!
鼻の穴は、英語で nostril(ノストリル)。
- thyrel(穴) → nosu と合わさって nosthyrl(鼻の穴) → nostril
- thyrel(穴) → 動詞 thyrlian(穴をあける、突き通す) → thirlen → thrill

bridegroom(花婿)の語源も見ておきましょう。古英語では brȳdguma=bride(花嫁)+ guma(男)でした。
nightingale(夜+歌う)、garlic(やり+ネギ)、world(人+時代)のように、片方の部品が単独で使われなくなると、言葉の意味は見えなくなります。日本語の「まぶた」の「ま」も同じです。ふだん使う単語の中に、千年ほど前の言葉の部品が残っているのです。

The English word for the holes in your nose is "nostril." It is a very old word. In Old English, more than 900 years ago, people said "nosthyrl." "Nosu" meant nose, and "thyrl" meant hole.
So a nostril is just a "nose hole." The old word for "hole" also gave English a verb that meant "to push through." That verb later became "thrill," the excited feeling you get on a roller coaster.

鼻の穴を表す英語は「nostril」です。とても古い言葉です。900年以上前の古英語では、「nosthyrl」と言っていました。「nosu」は鼻、「thyrl」は穴という意味でした。つまり nostril は、ただの「鼻の穴」なのです。
この「穴」という古い言葉から、「突き通す」という意味の動詞も英語に生まれました。その動詞がのちに「thrill」になりました。ジェットコースターに乗ったときの、わくわくする気持ちのことです。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
nostril と thrill の語源の話なので B。
Q2. What did "thyrl" mean in Old English?
"thyrl" meant hole とあるので B。
Q3. In the passage, what is a "thrill"?
the excited feeling you get on a roller coaster とあるので C。
Some English words hide parts that people stopped using long ago. Take "nostril." In Old English it was "nosthyrl," from "nosu" (nose) and "thyrel" (hole). The word for "hole" also produced a verb meaning "to pierce," and in Middle English that verb turned into "thrill."
So the holes in your nose and the excitement of a roller coaster share an ancestor. Other words work the same way. A "nightingale" is a bird that sings at night, and its name comes from "niht" (night) and "galan" (to sing). "Garlic" combines "gar" (spear) and "leac" (leek), probably because a piece of garlic looks like the tip of a spear.

Q1. Which two words share an ancestor, according to the passage?
the holes in your nose and the excitement of a roller coaster share an ancestor とあり、nostril と thrill のことなので B。
Q2. What did "galan" mean?
"galan" (to sing) とあるので C。
Q3. Why does the writer mention "nightingale" and "garlic"?
Other words work the same way. のあとに挙げているので、古い部品がかくれた語の例を増やすため。A。
Dictionaries can show how a word was built, even when its pieces no longer mean anything on their own. Two major dictionaries trace "nostril" to the Old English "nosthyrl," a compound of "nosu" (nose) and "thyrel" (hole). From the same word for "hole," Old English formed "thyrlian," to pierce. In Middle English this became "thirlen" and then "thrillen," the source of "thrill."
Oxford calls "thirl" a dialect word, so most speakers have no reason to link a nose with excitement. Other common words hide old parts in the same way. "World" goes back to a Germanic compound meaning "age of man," and its first part is the "wer" in "werewolf." In Old English, "bridegroom" was "brydguma," bride plus "guma," man, and the ending was later reshaped to look like "groom."
Some of these stories are firmer than others. Oxford says the "were" in "werewolf" has usually been identified with "wer." The earwig got its name from an old belief that it crawls into people's ears, and the story that it eats into the brain is false. Japanese has a parallel in "mabuta," eyelid, whose "ma" is an old form of "me," eye.

辞書を見ると、部品が単独ではもう意味をもたなくなっていても、その単語がどう組み立てられたかが分かる。2つの大きな辞書が、どちらも「nostril」を古英語の「nosthyrl」にさかのぼらせている。「nosu(鼻)」と「thyrel(穴)」の複合語だ。
