「全部」の意味の the whole nine yards。
They went the whole nine yards for her birthday: balloons, a cake, and a live band.(彼女の誕生日に、風船もケーキも生バンドも、できることは全部やった)
シャピロはこれを「phrase inflation(言い回しのインフレ)」と呼びました。

the whole nine yards

Ask Americans where "the whole nine yards" comes from, and many will tell you about machine gun belts on World War II fighter planes. Old newspapers tell a different story. In 2013, a researcher named Bonnie Taylor-Blake found "the full nine yards" in a small Indiana newspaper from 1907, in an article about a baseball game. That was more than 30 years before the war began.
Before that, she and Fred Shapiro, a quotation expert at Yale, had found "the whole six yards" in papers from 1912 and 1921. For a while they thought six was the original number. The 1907 find made them think again, and what the nine yards actually were is still a mystery.

Q3. What can be inferred about the "whole six yards" idea?
For a while they thought six was the original number. The 1907 find made them think again
For decades, people have explained "the whole nine yards" with confident stories. The yards were the cloth in a Scottish kilt, the load of a cement truck, or, most often, the length of a machine gun belt in a World War II fighter plane. The problem is the dates. Searching digitized newspapers, Bonnie Taylor-Blake, a neuroscience researcher in North Carolina, found "the full nine yards" in a 1907 Indiana baseball article and "the whole nine yards" in the same paper in 1908.
Before that, in 2012, she and Yale's Fred Shapiro had found "the whole six yards" in papers from 1912 and 1921. They suggested the number had grown from six to nine over time, the way "cloud seven" seems to have turned into "cloud nine." The 1907 example made that idea shaky.
Then, in 2015, an editor at the University of California, Berkeley turned up an 1850 Missouri letter that called a rival's long statement his "nine yards." Shapiro now thinks cloth theories are more believable than the war stories, but he sees no strong evidence for any of them. The phrase may never have measured anything at all.
