ひとことで言うと「&」の名前は、「&はそれだけで and」という唱え文句がちぢんだもの!
もくじ
「&」。この記号、何と読みますか?
「アンド」と読む人が多いでしょう。でも英語には、この記号そのものを指す名前があります。ampersand(アンパサンド)です。
そしてこの名前、じつは「and per se and」という4語の文句が縮んでできた言葉でした。意味は「&という記号は、それだけで and と読む」。この記号を覚えるための唱え文句だったのです。
01ampersand =「& は、それだけで and」
アメリカの辞書『アメリカン・ヘリテージ英語辞典(AHD)』によると、ampersand は and per se and が形を変えたものです。AHD はこの文句を、
&(という記号は)、それだけで、and(を意味する)
と読みといています。3つに分けると、こうなります。
- and:記号の「&」そのもの
- per se:ラテン語で「それだけで、それ自体で」
- and:「and と読む、and を表す」
つまり「& per se and」。
- The drug is not harmful per se, but is dangerous when taken with alcohol.(その薬はそれ自体は害がないが、アルコールと一緒に飲むと危険だ)
日常会話でも、こんなふうに使えます。
- I don't hate math per se.

- atone(つぐなう):中英語の at one(一つになって、意見が一致して)から。「仲直りする」が「つぐなう」になった
- alone(ひとりで):中英語の al(all, まったく)+ one(ひとつ)から
- already(すでに):中英語の al(all)+ redi(ready)から
atone は at + one、alone は all + one。
「&」の名前 ampersand は、and per se and(& は、それだけで and)という唱え文句が縮んだものでした。その真ん中には、今も使われるラテン語由来の per se が入っています。
次に & を見かけたら、心の中で「アンド・パー・セイ・アンド」と唱えてみてください。昔の英語の話し手と同じ覚え方です。

Company names like "Smith & Jones" use a sign that most of us read as "and." In English, the sign has a name of its own, "ampersand," and there is a story behind it. It comes from the phrase "and per se and."
"Per se" is Latin for "by itself," so the phrase means "the sign & on its own stands for 'and.'" According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries, people once chanted this phrase to help them learn the sign. Said again and again, the four words ran together into one. Dictionaries do not agree on the date. One says the word first appeared around the 1820s, and another says the middle of the 1800s.

Most of us type & without a second thought, yet its English name packs a whole sentence into one word. "Ampersand" is a worn-down form of "and per se and," which dictionaries explain as "the sign & by itself stands for 'and.'" According to the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries, people once chanted the phrase while learning the sign, and constant repetition squeezed the four words together.
Many websites go further and say & was recited as the 27th letter of the alphabet, right after Z. The three dictionaries checked for this article stop short of that claim. They also disagree on timing. Dictionary.com dates the name to around 1820 to 1830, and the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries say the middle of the 1800s.
Either way, the sign is far older than its name. A 2015 exhibition at the University of Sunderland in England traced almost 2,000 years of its history and described it as growing out of the Latin word "et," meaning "and." The middle part of the name has lasted too. "Per se" is still everyday English, as in "The idea isn't bad per se."

Q1. What is the main point of the passage?
名前は唱え文句 and per se and から生まれ、記号そのものは名前よりずっと古いという内容なので B。
Q2. According to the passage, what did the exhibition at the University of Sunderland say about the sign?
described it as growing out of the Latin word "et," meaning "and." とあるので C。
Q3. How does the writer treat the "27th letter" story?
The three dictionaries checked for this article stop short of that claim. とあり、広まっているが調べた辞書では裏づけられない話として扱っているので B。
