Siegfried Idyll is a piece for small orchestra that Wagner wrote in 1870 as a birthday present for his wife, Cosima. Wagner is famous for huge, long operas, but this music is unusually gentle and calm. 'Siegfried' was the name of their son, born the year before. An 'idyll' is a piece that suggests a peaceful life in the countryside.
At that time, the Wagner family lived at Tribschen, a house by Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. On Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, Wagner secretly gathered musicians and had them play on the stairs of the house. Cosima woke up to the music. The score bore a long title: 'Tribschen Idyll, with Fidi's birdsong and orange sunrise, as a symphonic birthday greeting'. Fidi was the family's nickname for little Siegfried.
It was first a private family piece, played by only 13 musicians. But Wagner needed money, and in 1878 he sold the score to a publisher. He also made a version for more players. Some of its melodies are also heard in the love scene at the end of his music drama Siegfried. Today it is one of Wagner's best-loved works.
This is a birthday present from Wagner to his wife. On Christmas morning, musicians played it on the stairs of their house. His wife woke up to the music! It is soft and warm music. There is a lullaby in it, too.

The young conductor Hans Richter played the short trumpet part, which lasts only 13 bars. To keep the surprise secret, he is said to have practiced out on Lake Lucerne, where no one at the house could hear him.
In the middle of the piece, the oboe plays an old German lullaby, 'Sleep, little child, sleep'. Wagner had written down this tune on New Year's Eve in 1868. Many listeners feel his love for his children in this part of the music.
The piece was supposed to be the family's secret treasure. But Wagner had big debts, partly because of his Bayreuth Festival, and in 1878 he sold the score to the publisher Schott. It is said that Cosima was very sad about it.
Wagner and Cosima had married only that August, in 1870. Cosima was the daughter of the piano superstar Franz Liszt. Their son Siegfried later became a composer and conductor, and he took over the Bayreuth Festival that his father had started.
