Spring' is the first concerto in Vivaldi's set of violin concertos, The Four Seasons. It is for solo violin, strings and continuo, and it has three movements: fast, slow, fast. The arrival of spring, birdsong, babbling streams and even a sudden thunderstorm are all painted vividly in sound.
Each of the four concertos comes with a short poem, a sonnet, describing the season, and lines from the poem are written into the score. Nobody knows for sure who wrote the poems, but some think it was Vivaldi himself. Music like this, which tells a story or paints a scene, is an early example of what was later called program music.
The Four Seasons was published in Amsterdam in 1725 as the first four of twelve concertos in a set called 'The Contest between Harmony and Invention.' After Vivaldi died, his fame faded greatly, but his music was rediscovered in the 20th century and became hugely popular in the age of records. In Japan, too, the recording by the Italian ensemble I Musici was a big hit.
This piece is about spring. Vivaldi wrote it for violin and strings. You can hear birds singing and water running. There is a storm, too! In the slow part, a dog barks.

In the second movement, a goatherd sleeps in a field of flowers while his dog keeps watch. The viola plays the dog's barking. The score says 'the barking dog,' and the players are told to repeat the same note loudly and roughly. Under the peaceful melody, the dog keeps on barking.
In the score of The Four Seasons, words from each sonnet are written at the matching places in the music. You can see exactly which passage means 'the birds greet spring with happy songs' or 'thunder roars.' It is a rare score where the composer gives his own guide to the music.
Vivaldi was a Catholic priest born in Venice, and because of his red hair he was called the 'Red Priest.' He taught music to girls at the Pietà, a charity home in Venice that raised abandoned children, and wrote many pieces for its orchestra. The Pietà's concerts were famous all over Europe.
In 2012, the British composer Max Richter released 'Recomposed,' a new version of The Four Seasons. He repeats and combines fragments of the original melodies in a modern style. You can clearly hear the birdsong from 'Spring,' and it brought The Four Seasons to a new, younger audience.
