The Story

Va, pensiero is a chorus from Act 3 of Verdi's opera Nabucco. The Hebrew people have been captured by Nabucco, the king of Babylon. By the river Euphrates, they sing about the home they have lost. The song begins, "Fly, my thoughts, on golden wings." It is quiet, but it touches the heart deeply.

Before writing this opera, Verdi had lost his young children and his wife, and a comic opera of his had failed. He was ready to give up music. In his own later account, a theater manager pushed a libretto on him. At home he threw it on the table, and it fell open at the words of Va, pensiero. Reading them moved him to write again.

The first performance, at La Scala in Milan in March 1842, was a huge success, and Verdi became famous almost overnight. Later, people linked this chorus with the dream of a united Italy, and today it is sometimes called Italy's second national anthem. However, scholars disagree about whether audiences heard it as a political song at the very first performances.

In this song, people are far from home. They are prisoners by a big river. They sing, "Fly, my thoughts, to my home." The composer was very sad at that time. Years later, he said these words helped him write music again.

Verdi was ready to quit music. He threw a libretto on the table, and it fell open at Va, pensiero. Verdi told this story himself many years later, and it may have become more dramatic as he retold it. Whatever really happened, the success of Nabucco changed his career.

It is said that during the fight to unite Italy, people wrote "VIVA VERDI" on walls. The letters V-E-R-D-I could also stand for "Vittorio Emanuele, King of Italy." It is a famous story, but historians still argue about how true it is.

Verdi died in 1901. It is said that when his body was moved to the rest home for musicians he had built in Milan, a large choir conducted by the young Toscanini sang this chorus. Many people in the crowd are said to have joined in.

Opera houses often avoid repeating a number in the middle of an opera. But this chorus is sometimes sung again when the audience will not stop clapping. In 2011 in Rome, the conductor Riccardo Muti even had the audience sing it together with the choir, and it made the news.
