Lágrima is a short prelude for guitar by Francisco Tárrega of Spain, often called the father of the modern classical guitar. 'Lágrima' means 'teardrop' in Spanish. But the piece begins in bright E major, turns to sad E minor in the middle, and then the bright part returns at the end. In a short time, it mixes tears and smiles.
Nobody knows exactly when it was written, but it was probably around 1891. Tárrega arranged piano music and other works for the guitar, and he wanted to show that a single guitar could express deep feelings. This piece is not too hard to play and shows the beauty of the guitar's sound, so many guitar students learn it.
There is a famous story that after a concert in London, Tárrega felt low and homesick, and he put those feelings into this piece. But there is no clear evidence, so we do not know if it is true. Either way, this little piece is still loved by guitarists around the world and played in concerts and lessons.
This is a short piece for guitar. Its name means 'teardrop' in Spanish. It starts in a happy way. Then it becomes sad. At the end, the happy part comes back.

A popular story says that when Tárrega was feeling low in London, people asked, 'Do you miss home? Why not put that feeling into music?' But no reliable source for this story has been found, and the dates given for the piece are all different. It is a lovely story, but let's enjoy it as a legend.
Tárrega's most-heard music may be a part of his 'Gran Vals'. That melody became the ringtone of Nokia mobile phones and rang all over the world. Many people are surprised to learn that it was written by the same composer as 'Lágrima'.
As a young man, Tárrega got a guitar made by Antonio de Torres, the master maker who created the shape of the modern classical guitar. Thanks to this rich-sounding instrument and Tárrega's way of playing, the guitar became accepted as a concert-hall instrument.
Tárrega was also a great teacher. His students included Miguel Llobet and Emilio Pujol. They spread his music and playing style around the world and built the foundation of the 20th-century guitar world. 'Lágrima' is still played in lessons today because of this tradition.
