The Story

Capricho árabe is a guitar piece written in 1892 by the Spanish guitarist Francisco Tárrega. A 'capricho' (caprice) is a piece in a free form, written as the composer pleases. Its subtitle is 'Serenata' (serenade), and after a quiet introduction, a mysterious, exotic melody sings softly, as if in the night air.

Southern Spain was ruled by Muslims for hundreds of years in the Middle Ages, and Islamic buildings such as the Alhambra palace in Granada still remain. In 19th-century Europe, a love of the 'exotic East' was in fashion. This piece shows the 'Arabian' mood that Europeans of the time imagined, and the lowest string is tuned down to give a deep, dark sound.

Tárrega dedicated this piece to his friend Tomás Bretón, a composer and conductor. Bretón wrote La verbena de la Paloma, a popular zarzuela (a Spanish musical play) set in the streets of Madrid. Capricho árabe is still an important piece for guitarists, and together with Recuerdos de la Alhambra, written four years later in 1896, it is loved as one of Tárrega's greatest works.

This is a guitar piece from Spain. It sounds like a night in an Arabian story. The melody is mysterious and beautiful. The player tunes the lowest string lower. So the guitar sounds deep and dark.

To play this piece, you tune the guitar's lowest (sixth) string down from E to D. This is called 'drop D' tuning. It lets the guitar ring out a low D, the home note of the piece. The dark, mysterious sound in D minor comes from this little trick.

This piece was dedicated to Tomás Bretón, a Spanish composer and conductor who was popular for his operas and zarzuelas. In those days, many people still saw the guitar as a simple street instrument, and Tárrega worked hard to have guitar music accepted as serious classical music.

Tárrega's most famous piece, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, was written in 1896 and is said to have come from his visit to the Alhambra palace in Granada. Capricho árabe came four years earlier. It shows that Tárrega was drawn to the Arab culture of Spain from early on.

This piece was used in an episode of Miami Vice, a popular American police drama of the 1980s. A classical guitar piece appeared in a flashy action show! It has also been arranged for many other instruments, such as the viola, the harp guitar and the bass guitar.
