Artist's Life" is a waltz written by Johann Strauss II, the "Waltz King," in 1867. After a bright introduction, several waltz tunes follow one another like a medley. At the end, earlier melodies come back, and the piece finishes in a lively way. It is full of the bright, elegant charm of Vienna.
Strauss wrote this piece for a ball held by "Hesperus," an association of artists in Vienna. The year before, in 1866, Austria had lost badly in a war with Prussia, and the mood in the city was gloomy. The carnival balls of the following winter were an important chance for people to feel cheerful again.
It was first played on 18 February 1867 at the Hesperus ball. Only three days earlier, "The Blue Danube" had been heard for the first time. Releasing two great waltzes within a single week shows how productive Strauss was at the time. Today it is still played at concerts all over the world as one of the finest Viennese waltzes.
This is a waltz from Vienna. A waltz has three beats. Strauss wrote it for a party of artists. He wrote "The Blue Danube" in the same year. The two waltzes were first played only three days apart!

The Blue Danube was first heard on 15 February 1867, and Artist's Life on 18 February. Born just three days apart, both became enduring favorites among Strauss's waltzes. Their opus numbers are close too: 314 for the Danube and 316 for this one.
Hesperus was a club for painters, writers, musicians and other artists in Vienna. The Strauss brothers were members. At the same ball, Johann's brother Josef also presented a new piece. The brothers worked together to make the party a success.
In 1866 the Austrian army suffered a heavy defeat by Prussia at the Battle of Königgrätz. The next carnival season was special for the people of Vienna, who wanted to blow away their dark mood. The Blue Danube and this waltz were born right in the middle of it.
A Strauss waltz usually has an introduction, several short waltzes, and a closing section called a coda. This piece is also a "box of assorted waltzes," with different tunes one after another. The fun is that the mood changes many times within one piece.
