The Story

The Fairest of the Fair is a march Sousa wrote in 1908. The title means 'the most beautiful person at the fair.' Among Sousa's many marches, it is known as one of the more melodic and less military ones, with smooth, singing tunes.

It was written for the Boston Food Fair, held every year in Boston. Sousa's band was going to play there in the fall of 1908. At that time, Sousa was also busy with other work, such as operettas and even novels. He finished the march in New York State in the summer of that year.

Between 1906 and 1910, Sousa wrote very few new pieces. Even so, the flowing melodies of this march won many fans, and it is still one of his popular marches. Bands around the world, including the U.S. Marine Band, often play and record it.

The title means 'the most beautiful girl at the fair.' Sousa wrote it for a food fair in Boston. Some people say a pretty girl at the fair gave him the idea. The melody sounds like a song. It is a gentle march.

Surprising Facts

There is a story that Sousa got the idea from a beautiful young woman he had seen at an earlier fair. But there is no clear evidence, so it is only something people say. It is a romantic story that fits the title, but the truth is unknown.

The last page of the original score is signed 'Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.' Saranac Lake is a summer retreat in the mountains of New York State. Sousa finished a march for an autumn fair beside a cool lake in summer.

Sousa wrote more than 130 marches in his life, but this was the only work of any kind he composed in 1908. Between 1906 and 1910, he wrote only a handful of pieces. That makes this march a rare gem from those years.

The English word 'fair' can mean 'beautiful' (an old meaning) and also 'a big show or exhibition.' The title is a play on these two meanings: 'the fairest person at the fair.' The Japanese title focuses on the beauty part.
