Symphony No. 1, 'Spring', is the first symphony Schumann completed, written in 1841. The year before, after a long court battle, he had finally married Clara. Born during their happy first months together, this music is full of the joy of winter ending and spring arriving. At the very start, trumpets and horns ring out a fanfare announcing that spring is here.
Schumann sketched the whole symphony in just four days, from 23 to 26 January 1841, and finished the orchestration by 20 February. According to Clara's diary, the title 'Spring' came from a spring poem by Adolf Böttger. The movements originally had titles too, 'The Beginning of Spring', 'Evening', 'Merry Playmates' and 'Spring in Full Bloom', but they were removed before publication.
The first performance took place at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 31 March 1841, conducted by his friend Mendelssohn, and it was a great success. Schumann, who had mostly written piano music and songs until then, was now recognized as a composer for orchestra too. That is why 1841 is often called Schumann's 'symphony year'.
Schumann married Clara in 1840. He was very happy. The next year, he wrote this symphony about spring. He wrote the first plan of it in just four days! At the start, trumpets play loudly. They sound like a call to wake up and welcome spring.

From 23 to 26 January 1841, Schumann sketched the entire symphony in only four days, and the full orchestral score was done by 20 February. It is as if music was simply pouring out of the happy newlywed.
The opening fanfare was first written lower than it is today. On the valveless horns and trumpets of the time, some of those notes sounded muffled, so the passage is said to have been moved higher during rehearsals. Sources differ about who made the change.
In a letter to a conductor, Schumann wrote that the first trumpet entry should sound as if it came from on high, like a call to awaken. This shows that he imagined the opening fanfare as a call to wake up.
The titles 'The Beginning of Spring', 'Evening', 'Merry Playmates' and 'Spring in Full Bloom' were removed before publication, perhaps so as not to limit the listener's imagination. Still, when you listen, each title seems to fit perfectly.
