Carnaval is a set of more than twenty short piano pieces that Schumann wrote in 1834–35. It is set at a masked carnival ball, where clowns like Pierrot and Harlequin, young lovers and even real musicians appear one after another. Its subtitle is 'Little Scenes on Four Notes', because most of the pieces use short motifs made from four-note codes.
In German note names, the four notes are A, Es (E-flat), C and H (B). They give the letters A-S-C-H, which spell 'Asch', a town connected with Ernestine von Fricken, Schumann's fiancée at the time. These letters are also hidden in his own name: 'SCHumAnn'. There are pieces called 'Chiarina' (Clara), 'Estrella' (Ernestine), 'Chopin' and 'Paganini'.
The last piece is the 'March of the League of David against the Philistines'. The League of David was a band of artists dreamed up by Schumann to fight against dull, old-fashioned music. The set was dedicated to the violinist Karol Lipiński. In 1910, the choreographer Michel Fokine turned it into a ballet, using orchestrations by Russian composers including Glazunov and Lyadov.
This is a set of short piano pieces about a carnival party. People wear masks and dance. Clowns, lovers and even famous musicians come to the party. The music uses a secret code of four notes. The code spells the name of a town!

In German, notes have letter names, and E-flat is written 'Es', so its last letter, S, can be used in a code. Schumann used this to write 'Asch', a town connected with his fiancée, in notes. 'Asche' also means 'ash' in German, which links to Ash Wednesday, the day after the carnival season ends.
In the middle of the set, Schumann wrote three one-bar 'Sphinxes': mysterious groups of notes with no tempo or dynamics. Clara's edition says they should not be played, and they are usually skipped, but some pianists have recorded them.
The set includes pieces called 'Eusebius' and 'Florestan'. These were Schumann's names for the two sides of his personality: dreamy Eusebius and passionate Florestan. In other words, Schumann put himself into the ball as two different characters.
'Estrella' is thought to be his fiancée Ernestine, and 'Chiarina' the young Clara. Schumann's engagement to Ernestine was later broken off, and he went on to marry Clara. Both women appear together in this musical ball.
