The Story

The Sonata in B minor, K. 27, is one of the 30 sonatas in Essercizi per gravicembalo (Exercises for Harpsichord), published in London around 1738–39. It is marked Allegro, but it has a gentle, wistful feeling typical of B minor. A highlight of the piece is the hand-crossing, where, for example, the left hand reaches over the right to play high notes.

The Essercizi were dedicated to King João V of Portugal. Scarlatti had taught the harpsichord to Princess Maria Barbara in Lisbon, and when she married the Spanish crown prince, he moved to Spain with her. In the preface, Scarlatti told readers not to expect deep learning, but to enjoy the pieces as playful games of harpsichord skill.

Of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas, these 30 are thought to be the only ones published with his involvement. That makes the collection very important for understanding his ideas. The score marks the right hand with 'D' and the left hand with 'M', which shows how important hand-crossing was. Today the collection is also popular with piano students.

In this piece, the hands cross over. The left hand jumps over the right hand! The music is a little sad but very pretty. It was printed in London in 1738 or 1739. Scarlatti wanted people to enjoy it like a game.

In the preface, Scarlatti tells amateurs and professionals alike not to expect deep meaning. These pieces are a playful game of harpsichord skill, he says. He ends with the greeting 'Live happily'. It shows a very friendly side of this genius.

In 1738, thanks to King João V of Portugal, Scarlatti was made a knight of the Order of Santiago. Dedicating the Essercizi, published the next year, to this king is thought to have been partly a way of saying thank you.

The last piece in the same collection, No. 30 (K. 30), is known as the 'Cat's Fugue'. There is a story that Scarlatti got the idea from his cat walking on the keyboard, but this is a later legend, and the nickname was not his.

In his later sonatas, there is less hand-crossing. One story says this is because Scarlatti (or Queen Maria Barbara) became too heavy to cross arms easily. But there is no clear proof, so it is best enjoyed as a fun rumor.
