ホー!楽譜には「とても光って」「問いかけて」なんてふしぎな言葉が書いてあるよ。
サティが1890年ごろに書いたピアノ曲『グノシエンヌ』の第1番です。ゆっくりした伴奏の上に、東洋や中東を思わせる、くねくねとしたなぞめいたメロディーが続きます。『ジムノペディ』と並んで、サティの代表作として知られています。静かなのにどこか落ち着かない、ふしぎな味わいのある曲です。This is the first of Satie's Gnossiennes, written around 1890. Over a slow accompaniment, a winding, mysterious melody unfolds, with a flavor that suggests faraway lands to the east. Along with the Gymnopédies, it is one of Satie's best-known works. It is quiet, yet somehow restless, with a strange charm all its own.
この曲の楽譜には、拍子記号も小節線(区切りの線)もありません。それでも伴奏は、低い音と和音を規則正しくくり返すので、演奏者は一定の脈を感じながら弾きます。さらに楽譜には「とても光って」「問いかけて」「考えの先っぽで」といった、ふつうの楽譜では見かけないふしぎなことばが書かれています。The score has no time signature and no bar lines, the lines that divide music into measures. Even so, the accompaniment repeats a low note and a chord in a regular pattern, so players still feel a steady pulse. On top of that, the score includes strange instructions you won't see in ordinary music, such as 'very shiny,' 'question,' and 'from the tip of your thought.'
グノシエンヌという題はサティが作ったことばで、意味ははっきりしていません。古代ギリシャのクレタ島にあった都市クノッソスに由来するという説や、「知識」を意味するギリシャ語「グノーシス」から来たという説があります。第1番は1893年に出版され、今も映画やドラマのなぞめいた場面などで使われることがあります。'Gnossienne' is a word Satie made up, and its meaning is not clear. One idea links it to Knossos, an ancient city on the Greek island of Crete. Another says it comes from 'gnosis,' a Greek word for knowledge. No. 1 was published in 1893, and it is still sometimes used in films and dramas for mysterious scenes.
This is a strange and beautiful piano piece. The music has no bar lines. Satie wrote funny words in the music, like 'very shiny.' Nobody knows what the title really means. It sounds a little mysterious.これはふしぎで美しいピアノ曲です。この音楽には小節線がありません。サティは楽譜に「とても光って」のようなおもしろいことばを書きました。題名の本当の意味はだれにもわかりません。少しなぞめいて聞こえます。

ふつうの楽譜には「だんだん強く」などの指示が書かれます。でもこの曲には「とても光って」「問いかけて」「考えの先っぽで」など、詩のようなことばが書かれています。どう弾けばいいのか、ピアニストはそれぞれ想像するしかありません。
Most scores give instructions like 'getting louder.' This one says things like 'very shiny,' 'question,' and 'from the tip of your thought,' almost like poetry. Each pianist has to imagine what they mean.
グノシエンヌということばは、もともと存在しなかった、サティが作ったことばです。クレタ島の古代都市クノッソスに関係があるという説などがありますが、はっきりした説明は残っていません。なぞのままなのが、サティらしいところです。
The word 'Gnossienne' did not exist before Satie made it up. Some connect it with Knossos, the ancient city on Crete, but no clear explanation has come down to us. Leaving it a mystery is very much Satie's style.
サティは「ヴェクサシオン(いやがらせ)」という短い曲に、「840回くり返す」とも読める指示を書きました。1963年にはアメリカの作曲家ジョン・ケージたちが、交代しながら18時間以上かけて実際に演奏したと言われています。
Satie wrote a short piece called Vexations with a note that can be read as 'repeat it 840 times.' In 1963, the American composer John Cage and others reportedly performed it in turns, taking more than 18 hours.
サティは「家具の音楽」というアイデアも考えました。家具のように、そこにあっても聞き流してよい音楽、という意味です。BGMの考え方の先がけとも言われ、今の環境音楽やお店のBGMにもつながる発想です。
Satie also came up with the idea of 'furniture music': music that is just there, like furniture, so you don't have to listen closely. It is often called an early form of background music, and it connects to today's ambient music and shop music.
