グノシエンヌ第4番

サティはこの曲に題名も番号もつけていませんでした。「グノシエンヌ第4番」という名前は、1968年に出版されるとき、似た雰囲気をもつ曲として後からつけられたものです。もしサティが知ったら、どんな顔をしたでしょうか。

Satie gave this piece no title and no number. The name 'Gnossienne No. 4' was added later, when it was published in 1968, because it has a similar mood. One wonders what Satie would have thought.

楽譜の日付は1891年1月22日。出版は1968年。そのあいだ77年もの時間がありました。サティの死後に見つかった楽譜を、作曲家ロベール・カビーが整理し、第5番・第6番とまとめて世に出しました。

The manuscript is dated January 22, 1891. It was published in 1968, 77 years later. The composer Robert Caby edited the manuscripts found after Satie's death and brought out this piece together with Nos. 5 and 6.

1891年ごろ、サティは作家ペラダンが率いる神秘主義の団体「薔薇十字会」の作曲家として、儀式用のファンファーレなどを書いていました。しかしやがて対立して離れ、1893年には自分だけが信者の「教会」まで作ってしまいます。

Around 1891, Satie was composer for the Rose+Croix, a mystical society led by the writer Joséphin Péladan, writing fanfares for its ceremonies. But he soon fell out with Péladan and left. In 1893, he even founded his own 'church,' with himself as its only member.

ふつう「グノシエンヌ」といえば第1〜6番の6曲です。ただし、サティは1891年の劇の音楽『星たちの息子』の中にも、自分で「グノシエンヌ」と名づけた曲を入れていて、これを「第7番」と呼ぶこともあります。数え方によって答えが変わる、なぞのシリーズです。

Usually, the Gnossiennes are counted as six pieces, Nos. 1 to 6. But Satie also included a piece he himself called 'Gnossienne' in his 1891 music for the play Le Fils des étoiles, which is sometimes called 'No. 7.' The answer depends on how you count.
