The Story

Gnossienne No. 3 is a piano piece Satie wrote around 1890, the last of the first three Gnossiennes. Over a slow accompaniment much like No. 1's, a winding, Eastern-sounding melody drifts slowly along. It is melancholy, yet somehow calming, with a strange flavor all its own.

The score has no time signature and no bar lines, and here and there Satie wrote his typically strange words. For example, 'open your head' and 'bury the sound.' These aren't normal musical terms but riddles, like lines from a poem. How to play them is left to the pianist's imagination.

The piece first appeared in the magazine Le Figaro musical in 1893, but at that time it was labeled 'No. 2.' The three were published together with today's numbers 20 years later, in 1913. Today, along with No. 1, it is one of the most often played Gnossiennes.

This is a slow and strange piano piece. The music has no bar lines. Satie wrote funny words in it, like 'Open your head.' At first, it was called No. 2! Later, it became No. 3.

Listening Guide

Listen to the slow, low accompaniment from the start. Is it like the one in No. 1?
Above it, an Eastern-sounding melody winds slowly. Enjoy the silence between the notes, too.
Near the end, the melody sinks even more quietly. Maybe this is where you 'bury the sound.'

Surprising Facts

In the middle of the score is the phrase 'Ouvrez la tête,' meaning 'open your head.' Of course, nobody really opens their head! Some take it to mean 'open your mind.' Instead of 'loud' or 'soft,' Satie gives instructions about your state of mind.

Near the end is another instruction: 'Enfouissez le son,' or 'bury the sound.' Perhaps it means to play softly and deeply, as if hiding the sound underground. There's no right answer. Each pianist gives a different answer in sound.

When it appeared in Le Figaro musical in 1893, this piece was marked 'No. 2.' The three were first published together with today's numbers in 1913. The Gnossiennes are a series full of mysteries, even about their numbers and dates.

In 1893, the year this piece was published, Satie became the boyfriend of the painter Suzanne Valadon. She is the only romantic partner Satie is known to have had. Their romance lasted about six months, and Satie stayed single for the rest of his life.
