グノシエンヌ第2番

ふつう曲のはじめには「ゆっくり」「速く」などのテンポが書かれます。でもこの曲のはじめにあるのは「おどろきをもって（Avec étonnement）」。何におどろくのかは書かれていません。弾く人も聴く人も、おどろきながら始めるしかないのです。

Normally, the start of a piece tells you the tempo, like 'slow' or 'fast.' But this one begins 'Avec étonnement,' 'with astonishment.' It doesn't say what to be astonished by. Players and listeners just have to start out amazed.

楽譜の途中には「外に出ないで（Ne sortez pas）」という言葉もあります。家から出るな、という意味なのか、曲の世界から出るなという意味なのか、答えはありません。「うぬぼれずに」「大きなやさしさの中で」など、ほかの言葉も詩のようです。

In the middle of the score is 'Ne sortez pas,' 'don't go out.' Does it mean 'stay at home,' or 'don't leave the world of the music'? There is no answer. Other phrases, like 'without pride' and 'in great kindness,' are just as poetic.

1893年に雑誌にのった楽譜には、アントワーヌ・ド・ラ・ロシュフーコーという人物への献辞がありました。彼は当時、サティとともに神秘主義の芸術運動にかかわっていた人です。ところが1913年の出版では、この献辞はなくなっていました。

When the score appeared in a magazine in 1893, it was dedicated to Antoine de La Rochefoucauld, who was involved with Satie in a mystical art movement at the time. But in the 1913 edition, the dedication had disappeared.

1893年、サティは「主導者イエスの芸術首都教会」という自分だけの教会を作り、自分がそのただ1人の信者でした。教会の名前で、ほかの芸術家を批判する手紙を書いたりもしています。グノシエンヌのふしぎな言葉にも、そんなサティの変わり者ぶりが表れています。

In 1893, Satie founded his own church, the 'Metropolitan Church of Art of Jesus the Conductor,' and he was its only member. He even wrote letters in the church's name attacking other artists. The strange words in the Gnossiennes show the same eccentric side of Satie.
