Zigeunerweisen is a piece for violin and orchestra, or piano, written in 1878 by Pablo de Sarasate, a great violinist from Spain. The title is German for 'Gypsy airs', or songs of the Roma people. It is based on the style of music played by Roma musicians in Hungary.
After a heavy opening by the orchestra, the violin sings in a sobbing way in the first half, and then the second half is breathtakingly fast. One tender melody in the middle comes from a song by the Hungarian composer Elemér Szentirmay. In the second half, difficult tricks appear one after another, such as plucking the strings with the left hand and high, whistle-like notes.
Sarasate often played it himself, and it became one of his best-known showpieces. Many composers wrote music for him; Lalo's Symphonie espagnole is one example. In 1904, he recorded this piece himself. In Japan, Hyakken Uchida wrote a story called Sarasate's Record about this recording, and in 1980 the director Seijun Suzuki made a film based on it called Zigeunerweisen.
This is a famous piece for violin. The first part is slow and sad. The second part is very, very fast. The violinist plays many difficult tricks. The composer was a great violinist from Spain.

On the record Sarasate made in 1904, there is a moment where something like a person's voice can be heard during the music. It is said to be Sarasate's own voice. Hyakken Uchida used this in his story Sarasate's Record and turned it into a strange tale.
The slow, sweet melody in the middle is not Sarasate's own. It is known to come from a song by the Hungarian composer Elemér Szentirmay. Sarasate cleverly took in a Hungarian-style song that people of his time already knew.
Sarasate's beautiful tone and skill were famous all over Europe. Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, and Saint-Saëns's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Violin Concerto No. 3 were all written for him or dedicated to him.
Usually, a violinist plucks the strings with the right hand, which holds the bow. But in the second half of this piece, the left-hand fingers pluck the strings too, mixed quickly with bowed notes. It sounds almost like two players. It is true virtuoso magic.
