Sarasate was born in 1844 in Pamplona, in northern Spain, where his father was an army bandmaster. He began learning the violin from his father at five, and in 1852, at the age of seven, he made his first public appearance in A Coruña. He went on to study in Madrid, where he won the favor and support of Queen Isabella II. At twelve he was sent to the Paris Conservatoire in France to study with the great teacher Jean-Delphin Alard.
His journey to Paris was a hard one. On the way his mother died suddenly, and Sarasate himself fell ill with cholera. The Spanish consul nursed him back to health and helped pay for him to reach Paris. At the Conservatoire he won the top prize, and he made his concert debuts in Paris in 1860 and in London in 1861. His pure, beautiful tone and the ease with which he played fast, difficult passages made him a star.
Sarasate also wrote music for himself to play, including Zigeunerweisen (1878), the Spanish Dances, and the Carmen Fantasy, based on tunes from Bizet's opera. Many composers wrote works for him too. Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, Bruch's Scottish Fantasy and Saint-Saëns's Violin Concerto No. 3 were all dedicated to him.
Even as an international star, he loved his hometown and is said to have returned to Pamplona every July for the San Fermín festival. In 1904 he made recordings of his own playing. He died of chronic bronchitis in Biarritz, in southwestern France, on 20 September 1908, aged 64. His beloved Stradivarius violins went to Paris and Madrid, and Pamplona has also hosted an international violin competition named after him.
Sarasate was born in Spain in 1844. His father taught him the violin. He first played in public at seven! Later, he played the violin all over the world. He wrote Zigeunerweisen. It is very fast and very hard to play.

In Arthur Conan Doyle's detective story The Red-Headed League (1891), Sherlock Holmes notes that Sarasate is playing at St James's Hall that afternoon and takes Watson along to the concert. Sarasate was famous enough to appear in one of the world's best-loved stories.
Sarasate's 1904 recording of Zigeunerweisen is said to include what sounds like a human voice in the middle of the music, and some say it is Sarasate himself. In Japan, this inspired Hyakken Uchida's short story Sarasate's Record and Seijun Suzuki's 1980 film Zigeunerweisen.
There is a story about how Sarasate started playing. As a small boy, he watched his father struggling to practice a difficult passage. Then he picked up the violin and played it perfectly. It is just the kind of legend told about a child prodigy.
In 1884 the American-born painter James McNeill Whistler painted a full-length portrait of Sarasate titled Arrangement in Black: Pablo de Sarasate. It shows him standing elegantly in black, holding his violin. Not just his playing, but his presence, inspired artists.
George Bernard Shaw, the British playwright who was also famous as a sharp music critic, praised Sarasate by writing that he left criticism gasping miles behind him. His playing could win over even the toughest critic.
Sarasate owned two Stradivarius violins. He left the 1724 instrument to Paris, where it is now known as the Sarasate Stradivarius and kept at the Musée de la Musique. The other, the 1713 Boissier, belongs to the Royal Conservatory in Madrid.
