The Swan is No. 13 of Saint-Saëns's suite The Carnival of the Animals. Two pianos create the gentle ripples of quiet water, and above them the cello sings slowly, like a swan gliding along. It lasts only about three minutes, but it is loved all over the world as one of the great pieces for cello.
The Carnival of the Animals was written in 1886 as a humorous suite for a private concert during the carnival season. Lions, hens, tortoises, elephants, kangaroos and many other animals appear one after another, and the suite includes many parodies of famous music. The Swan stands apart from the more comic movements with its singing beauty.
Saint-Saëns did not allow The Carnival of the Animals to be published or performed in public while he was alive. His reason is not certain, but it is often said that he worried such a silly work would hurt his reputation. The Swan was the exception: an arrangement for cello and piano was published in 1887. Later, the ballerina Anna Pavlova danced The Dying Swan to this music, and it is still performed today.
This is a slow and beautiful piece. The cello plays the song of a swan. The pianos sound like water. It is part of a funny set of animal music. The composer did not let the other parts be published while he was alive, but this one was different.

Saint-Saëns wrote The Carnival of the Animals for private performance and did not allow it to be published or performed in public while he was alive. The Swan was the only exception. The whole suite was published in 1922, the year after he died.
In "Tortoises," another piece in the same suite, Offenbach's famous can-can is played extremely slowly. Saint-Saëns made the slowest animal dance the fastest dance. That is his sense of humor.
The choreographer Michel Fokine later recalled that he created The Dying Swan to this music for the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova in 1905. However, the earliest recorded performance is from 1907, so the year of the first performance is debated. It is said she danced it thousands of times in her life, and it became her signature piece.
In "Fossils," another piece in the suite, Saint-Saëns quotes his own famous work Danse macabre, played on a xylophone that sounds like rattling bones. He called his own music a "fossil" just for a laugh.
