The Story

Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso" is a piece for violin and orchestra written by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns in 1863. After a sad, slow "introduction," a "rondo" begins with rhythms like a Spanish dance. A rondo is a form in which the same melody keeps coming back. "Capriccioso" means "in a playful, changeable way."

The piece was written for, and dedicated to, the brilliant Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. He was still in his teens, but he was already drawing attention in Europe with his beautiful tone and amazing skill. The Spanish flavor of the music can be heard as a greeting to Sarasate's homeland.

It was first performed in Paris in 1867, with Sarasate as the soloist, and it was a great success. Later, other composers worked on it too: Bizet arranged it for violin and piano, and Debussy for two pianos. Today it is a popular showpiece at competitions and concerts, where it shows off a violinist's skill.

This is music for a violin and an orchestra. It starts slow and sad. Then it becomes fast, like a Spanish dance. A young Spanish violinist played it first. The ending is very fast and exciting!

There is a story that this piece was first planned as the final movement of Saint-Saëns's Violin Concerto No. 1. However, some scholars doubt it, partly because an A-minor piece would be an unusual ending for a concerto in A major.

The version for violin and piano was arranged by none other than Bizet, the composer of "Carmen." Debussy also arranged it for two pianos. Great French composers all had a hand in this luxurious piece.

Saint-Saëns was not the only one who wrote great music for Sarasate. Lalo's "Symphonie espagnole" and Bruch's "Scottish Fantasy" were also dedicated to him. Sarasate himself composed the famous "Zigeunerweisen."

In the 1939 American film "They Shall Have Music," Jascha Heifetz, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, appeared as himself and played this piece. Music for a master shone on the movie screen too.
