Piano Concerto No. 2 is a work for piano and orchestra written by Saint-Saëns in 1868. It opens with the piano alone, playing a serious, improvised-sounding passage like an organ piece by Bach. Then the second movement is light and bouncy, and the third races ahead fiercely like a tarantella, a fast Italian dance. It is an unusual plan.
The piece was written for a concert in Paris at which the great Russian pianist Anton Rubinstein was to conduct. Saint-Saëns decided to play the piano part himself, and it is said he wrote the concerto in about 17 days. It has no slow middle movement. Instead, the movements go slow, faster, and very fast, as if speeding up.
It was first performed in Paris on 13 May 1868, with the composer at the piano and Rubinstein conducting. It is said there was not enough time to prepare, and the first reaction was not very good. But pianists came to love it, and it became the most often played of Saint-Saëns's five piano concertos.
This is music for piano and orchestra. It starts with the piano alone. The first part is slow and serious. Then the music gets faster and more exciting. The composer wrote it in only about 17 days!

The pianist and composer Zygmunt Stojowski is said to have described this concerto as beginning with Bach and ending with Offenbach. From a serious, Bach-like opening to a finale like a cheerful Paris operetta: it is a perfect description.
It is said that Saint-Saëns finished this concerto in about 17 days to be ready for Rubinstein's Paris concert. Because of this, there was little time to practice, and it is reported that even the composer could not play it at his best at the premiere.
Anton Rubinstein was one of the greatest pianists of the 19th century, often mentioned together with Liszt. At this concert, the roles were reversed: Rubinstein conducted, and Saint-Saëns played the piano.
Saint-Saëns made his concert debut in Paris at age 10. It is said that, as an encore, he offered to play any of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas from memory. The brilliant piano writing in this concerto comes from the composer's own amazing skill.
