The Story

Saint-Saëns wrote his Cello Concerto No. 1, for cello and orchestra, in 1872. The orchestra plays one short chord, and right away the cello jumps in with a stormy, rolling melody. The whole work is one movement without breaks, but it has three sections inside, so you can enjoy a tightly packed drama in about 20 minutes.

At that time, France had just lost the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871 Saint-Saëns and his friends founded the Société Nationale de Musique to spread new instrumental music by French composers. This concerto was born in that period. In the middle section, the strings play elegant music like a minuet, an old court dance.

It was first performed on 19 January 1873 at a concert of the Paris Conservatoire's concert society, with the cellist Auguste Tolbecque, to whom it was dedicated, as soloist. These concerts were very traditional, so playing a new work there was seen as a sign that Saint-Saëns had been accepted by the French music world. Today it is a must-play piece for cellists.

This is music for cello and orchestra. The orchestra plays one chord, and the cello starts at once! The music is strong and exciting. In the middle, there is a soft, old-style dance. Many cellists love to play it.

In many concertos, the orchestra plays a long introduction before the soloist enters. But here, after just one chord, the cello leaps out as the star. It is a bold start that drops the listener right into the middle of the story.

Auguste Tolbecque, who gave the premiere, was not only a cellist but also an instrument maker who built and restored old instruments. Many of his instruments are now kept in the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels.

The music flows without a break, but it has three parts: a stormy opening, an elegant minuet-like middle, and a passionate ending. In the last part, the opening melody returns and ties everything together. It is short, but it feels as satisfying as a big concerto.

In 1871 Saint-Saëns, together with Franck, Fauré and others, founded the Société Nationale de Musique. Its motto was "Ars Gallica" (French art). In France, where opera was king, they wanted to grow instrumental music such as symphonies, chamber music and concertos.
