The Story

The Bacchanale is a dance from Act 3 of Saint-Saëns's opera Samson and Delilah. A bacchanale is a wild party, named after Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. Near the end of the story, the Philistines dance in their temple to celebrate their victory. The exotic melody and rhythm grow hotter and hotter.

The story comes from the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. Samson, a hero of great strength, is tricked by Delilah into revealing the secret of his power, and he is captured by his enemies. Saint-Saëns loved travelling to North Africa and often visited Algeria. The oboe melody uses special note patterns that 19th-century French composers often used to suggest an imagined Middle Eastern sound.

The opera was first staged in 1877 and slowly won praise. Today it is counted among the great French operas. Delilah's aria 'My heart opens to your voice' is also very famous. Because the Bacchanale is for orchestra alone, it is often played by itself at concerts.

This is a dance from an opera. People have a big party in a temple. The music starts slowly with an oboe. Then it gets faster and louder. Soon after the dance, the strong hero Samson breaks the temple!

Saint-Saëns is said to have first planned this story as an oratorio, a concert work without acting. His librettist encouraged him to make it an opera instead. The many big choral scenes still show traces of that first plan.

In Paris at the time, a Bible story on the opera stage was hard to accept, so no theater would take it. With Liszt's help, it was premiered in Weimar, Germany, in 1877, sung in German. France had to wait until 1890 in Rouen, and the Paris Opéra until 1892.

After the Bacchanale, the captured Samson prays to God and, with his last strength, pushes down the temple's pillars. The temple collapses, and the opera ends. The wild party comes just before this shocking twist.

Wind band arrangements of the Bacchanale are very popular, and it has often been played at band concerts and competitions in Japan. With lots of percussion and a thrilling ending, it is a rewarding challenge for players.
