The Story

Melody in F' is a piano piece by the Russian composer and pianist Anton Rubinstein. It is the first of his Two Melodies, Op. 3. As its title suggests, it is a short, simple piece built around one beautiful, gently singing melody. The calm, friendly tune goes straight to the listener's heart.

The piece was written around 1852, when Rubinstein was in his early twenties. He was known as a child prodigy at the piano and was said to be one of the few pianists who could rival Liszt. Besides performing, he composed many large works, such as symphonies and operas. But the piece that became most widely known was this small one.

Melody in F' became hugely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it was arranged for cello, violin, wind instruments and more. In 1862, Rubinstein founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, the first conservatory in Russia, and one of its first graduates was Tchaikovsky. Rubinstein helped build the foundation of Russian music.

Rubinstein was a major composer who wrote six symphonies and many operas. Yet today, the work he is best known for is this short 'Melody'. A small piece from his youth became more famous than the big works he worked so hard on. That often happens in music!

People often said that Rubinstein's face and hair looked very much like Beethoven's. Some even joked that he was Beethoven born again. Of course, Beethoven died two years before Rubinstein was born.

At the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, which Rubinstein founded in 1862, the young Tchaikovsky studied composition and became one of its first graduates. Rubinstein's younger brother, Nikolai, was also a pianist, and he founded the Moscow Conservatory. Together, the brothers built up music education in Russia.

In 1885–86, Rubinstein gave a series of seven 'Historical Concerts' that traced the history of piano music, from early keyboard music to Beethoven, Chopin and Russian composers. It is said that he played a huge number of pieces from memory. The concerts were held in several European cities and were a great success.
