The Story

Valses nobles et sentimentales is a set of eight waltzes for piano that Ravel wrote in 1911. The title is borrowed from two sets by Schubert, Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. These waltzes mix Viennese elegance with sharp, new harmonies, giving them a grown-up flavor.

At the top of the score is a line by the writer Henri de Régnier: 'the delightful and ever-new pleasure of a useless occupation.' Making something beautiful is a joy in itself, useful or not. That is very Ravel. The first waltz bursts in with bold chords, and in the final Epilogue, bits of the earlier waltzes float up and fade away like a dream.

The 1911 premiere took place at an unusual concert where the composers' names were kept secret, and listeners had to guess who wrote each piece. The pianist was Louis Aubert, to whom the work is dedicated. In 1912, Ravel orchestrated it and presented it as a ballet, Adélaïde, or the Language of Flowers, with a story he wrote himself.

This piece is a set of eight piano waltzes. At the first concert, nobody was told who wrote it. People had to guess. Many people guessed wrong! Some even booed the music. Later, it became a ballet about flowers.

Listening Guide

In the first waltz, listen to the bold, clashing chords right at the start. This is Ravel's way of saying hello.
The second waltz is much slower, with a melody like a sigh. Enjoy the changing moods from piece to piece.
In the final Epilogue, bits of the earlier waltzes return one after another, like distant memories.

At the premiere, listeners voted on who they thought the composer was. Names like Satie, Kodály and d'Indy came up, and only a tiny majority guessed Ravel. It is said that there was booing too. Without a famous name, even a great piece can be misjudged!

Louis Aubert, who premiered these waltzes, later became a composer. As a boy, he sang the treble solo at the 1888 premiere of Fauré's Requiem. He was there at the birth of two great works of French music!

The ballet version, Adélaïde, or the Language of Flowers, takes place in a Paris salon, where lovers send messages with flowers. Ravel wrote the story himself. The eight waltzes were reborn as music for a game of love told with flowers.

From around 1906, Ravel had been planning a big piece in honor of the Viennese waltz. These waltzes can be seen as a step along that road. The idea was finally completed in 1920 as La Valse. Ravel was a composer who couldn't stop thinking about waltzes!
