Le Tombeau de Couperin is a piano suite that Ravel wrote between 1914 and 1917. Its six movements are Prelude, Fugue, Forlane, Rigaudon, Minuet and Toccata, modeled on the French dance suites of the 18th century. A 'tombeau' (literally 'tomb') was a 17th-century name for a piece written in memory of someone.
Couperin in the title is François Couperin, a French composer of the Baroque era. But Ravel was probably honoring 18th-century French music in general, not only Couperin. While he was writing the suite, the First World War broke out, and Ravel went to the front as a truck driver. In 1917, he also lost his beloved mother.
Each of the six pieces is dedicated to friends who died in the war. At the 1919 premiere, the pianist was Marguerite Long. Joseph de Marliave, the friend to whom the final Toccata is dedicated, was her husband. That same year, Ravel chose four movements and arranged them for orchestra, and this version is also widely played.
This piano suite has six old-style parts. Ravel wrote it during a big war. Many of his friends died in the war. He wrote each part for a friend. But the music is not dark. It is bright and beautiful.

When people said the music was too cheerful for a memorial, Ravel is said to have answered, 'The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence.' Instead of crying out loud, he turned grief into something beautiful. That was Ravel's way of remembering his friends.
Marguerite Long, the pianist at the premiere, was one of France's greatest pianists. The final Toccata is dedicated to her husband, Joseph de Marliave, who was killed in the war. Later she also gave the premiere of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, becoming one of his most important partners.
Ravel hoped to join the air force, but partly because he was small and too light, he could not. He became a military truck driver instead. He is said to have carried supplies near Verdun, a place of terrible battles. There is also a story that he named his truck 'Adélaïde'.
For the 1919 orchestral version, Ravel chose only four movements: Prelude, Forlane, Minuet and Rigaudon. The Fugue and the Toccata were left out. In the orchestral version, listen for the oboe, which plays a starring role in many places.
