The Story

Ravel's Sonatine is a piano piece in three movements. 'Sonatine' means 'little sonata'. Many piano students play easy sonatinas, but Ravel's is a serious work, short but full of sparkling sound. The first movement is gentle, the second moves like a minuet, and the third is fast and lively.

It all began with a magazine competition. The rules asked for the first movement of a sonatina, no longer than 75 bars, with a prize of 100 francs. Encouraged by a friend, Ravel entered under a pen name made by mixing up the letters of his own name. He later added two more movements and finished the piece in 1905.

The first full performance was given in Lyon in 1906 by Paule de Lestang. The piece is dedicated to Ravel's friends Ida and Cipa Godebski (for their children he later wrote Ma mère l'Oye). It packs Ravel's fresh harmonies into a neat classical form, and it is still an important piece for pianists today.

This is a short piano piece in three parts. Ravel wrote the first part for a contest. The prize was 100 francs. He used a secret name in the contest. Ravel often played the first two parts. But people say he did not play the fast last part in public!

Listening Guide

At the start of the first movement, listen to the soft, high melody. Its shape comes back again and again.
The second movement is a slow minuet. It sounds like an old dance seen in a dream.
The third movement is a fast stream of notes like waves. It ends brilliantly in a bright major key.

Ravel(ラヴェル)の文字を並べかえると Verla(ヴェルラ)。

In Ravel's manuscript, the first movement was signed 'by Verla', which was later crossed out and changed to 'by Maurice Ravel'. Mix up the letters of Ravel, and you get Verla. The score still shows that he entered the contest under a pen name.

Ravel was not very confident as a pianist, so he often played this piece in public instead of harder works like Gaspard de la nuit. But he is said to have never played the fast, difficult third movement. A genius composer is not always a great pianist!

The melody at the start of the first movement, which leaps by an interval called a fourth, comes back in new forms in the second and third movements. That's why the three movements sound like brothers. Compare them, and you'll say, 'Oh, there it is!'

The third movement switches between three and five beats in a bar, so it rushes forward with surprising energy. You would never expect such a modern rhythm from a piece called a 'sonatina'. Neat form and free rhythm: enjoying both is the fun of Ravel.
