The Story

La Valse is an orchestral work Ravel wrote in 1919–1920, which he called a 'choreographic poem'. Couples dancing a waltz appear dimly through swirling clouds, then a brilliant ballroom comes into view, and finally the music ends violently, as if swallowed by a whirlpool. The score sets the scene at 'an imperial court, about 1855'.

The idea was an old one. From around 1906, Ravel had been planning a piece called 'Vienna' to honor the Waltz King, Johann Strauss II. After the First World War, Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes asked him for a ballet, and this piece was the result. The way the glittering waltz slowly twists and falls apart is truly shocking.

However, when Ravel and the pianist Marcelle Meyer played the two-piano version for him, Diaghilev said, 'It's a masterpiece, but it's not a ballet. It's a portrait of a ballet,' and did not stage it. The piece was first performed as a concert work in Paris in December 1920 and was a great success. Later, other companies staged it as a ballet, and today it is a favorite of orchestras everywhere.

This music is a waltz for orchestra. At first, it is soft and beautiful. Then it goes faster and louder. At the end, it sounds crazy and breaks apart! A famous ballet boss said, 'This is not a ballet.' Ravel was very hurt.

Listening Guide

In the middle, sweet Viennese waltz tunes come one after another. Notice how the tempo sways in a dreamy way.

Hurt by the rejection, Ravel broke off his friendship with Diaghilev. When they met again in 1925, Ravel refused to shake his hand. It is said that Diaghilev was so angry he wanted to challenge Ravel to a duel, but friends talked him out of it. The two never met again.

People often say the collapsing waltz stands for Europe destroyed by the First World War. But in 1922 Ravel himself said the piece had nothing to do with the situation in Vienna at that time, and that he did not mean it as a dance of death. How you hear it is up to you.

Igor Stravinsky and the young Francis Poulenc are said to have been there when Ravel played the piece for Diaghilev. According to Poulenc, Stravinsky said nothing at all, and Ravel quietly gathered up his music and left. What an awkward moment!

Besides the orchestral version, Ravel also left versions for solo piano and for two pianos. Because they try to bring the whole orchestra to the piano, they are extremely difficult, and confident virtuoso pianists love to play them.
