Boléro is a piece of ballet music written by the French composer Maurice Ravel in 1928. Over the same steady rhythm on a snare drum, two melodies are repeated again and again, each time played by different instruments. It begins very softly, more and more instruments join in, and it ends in a huge wall of sound from the whole orchestra.
Ravel wrote it for the dancer Ida Rubinstein. At first he planned to arrange piano pieces by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz for orchestra, but because of a problem with the rights, he decided to write something new himself. A bolero is originally a Spanish dance. The music stays in the same key almost the whole time and changes key only once, near the very end.
It was first performed at the Paris Opera in November 1928, with Rubinstein dancing, and it was a great success. Later it became even more popular as a concert piece than as a ballet. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, the British pair Torvill and Dean won the ice dance gold medal skating to it, and people still talk about that performance as a legend.
Boléro is a famous piece by Ravel. A small drum plays the same rhythm from start to end. It plays the rhythm 169 times! Two melodies come again and again. The music starts very quietly and gets louder and louder.「ボレロ」はラヴェルの有名な曲です。

Ravel is said to have told the composer Arthur Honegger: 'I have written only one masterpiece—Boléro. Unfortunately, there is no music in it.' He seems to have seen it as an experiment: no development of the melody, only the changing colors of the orchestra.
In 1930 the great conductor Arturo Toscanini played the piece very fast in Paris, and Ravel is said to have protested, 'That's not my tempo.' Ravel wanted it played calmly, without changing the tempo from beginning to end.
The saxophone is not a regular member of the orchestra, but in Boléro it plays the melody as a soloist. In one passage, Ravel also layers a horn, a celesta and two piccolos playing at different pitches, creating a strange sound almost like a pipe organ.
Boléro is said to be one of the classical pieces that earned the most money in royalties, and its copyright ended in France in 2016. Later, the heirs of the stage designer Alexandre Benois claimed he was a co-author, but in 2024 a French court ruled that Ravel was the only composer.
