Alborada del gracioso is the fourth piece in Ravel's piano set Miroirs (Mirrors), written in 1904–1905. The title is Spanish: an 'alborada' is a morning song, and a 'gracioso' is the comic jester in Spanish plays. The piano imitates strumming guitars and clicking castanets, and the whole piece is full of the flavor of Spain.
Ravel's mother came from the Basque region near Spain, and Ravel himself was born in Ciboure, a town near the Spanish border. He is said to have grown up hearing his mother sing Spanish songs, and Spain was a special place for him. In the middle of the piece, you hear the jester's long, slightly lonely song.
Miroirs was premiered in 1906 by Ravel's friend, the pianist Ricardo Viñes. Each of its five pieces is dedicated to a member of Les Apaches, Ravel's group of artist friends, and this one is dedicated to the critic Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi. In 1918, Ravel arranged it for orchestra, and that colorful version also became very popular.
This piano piece sounds Spanish. A comic character sings a morning song. The piano sounds like a guitar. Ravel's mother grew up in Spain. Spain was a special place for Ravel, too.

The piece has super-fast repeated notes on one key, and glissandos where the player slides across the keys while sounding two notes at once. These passages make it one of Ravel's most difficult piano pieces, a real chance for pianists to show off.
As a young man, Ravel belonged to a group of poets, painters and musicians called Les Apaches. In Paris at that time, 'apache' meant a street thug. It is said that these young people, who loved talking about new art, took this name for themselves. Each of the five pieces of Miroirs is dedicated to one of these friends.
Ravel later said that Miroirs marked a big change in his harmony, enough to puzzle people who were used to his earlier style. You can hear that newness in the guitar-like clashing chords of Alborada del gracioso.
The 1918 orchestral version adds castanets, tambourine, harps and more, so the Spanish sounds Ravel imagined on the piano got real colors. The jester's song in the middle is played by a solo bassoon. It is a famous solo that often appears in bassoon auditions.
