The Story

Symphony No. 2 is a symphony that Rachmaninoff wrote from 1906 to 1907. It is a large work that takes close to an hour to perform, and it overflows with sweet, aching melodies. The third movement, Adagio, in which the clarinet sings a long solo, is especially loved as some of the most beautiful music Rachmaninoff ever wrote.

In 1897, the premiere of Rachmaninoff's First Symphony was a terrible failure. He lost his confidence and could not compose for a long time. Even after he recovered with his Second Piano Concerto, it is said he still felt uneasy about writing symphonies. So he left busy Moscow, moved to Dresden in Germany, and worked on this symphony there.

When it was premiered in St. Petersburg in February 1908, with Rachmaninoff himself conducting, it was a great success, and it won the Glinka Award. The symphony is dedicated to Sergei Taneyev, who had taught him at the conservatory. For many years it was often played with cuts to make it shorter, but from the second half of the 20th century, complete performances spread. Today it is one of Rachmaninoff's most important works.

This is a long symphony by Rachmaninoff. His first symphony failed, and he was very sad. But this one was a big success! The third part has a beautiful, long clarinet solo. A pop song used its melody, too.

Surprising Facts

The melody of the third movement was used in Never Gonna Fall in Love Again, a 1976 song by the American singer Eric Carmen. Carmen also used a melody from the Second Piano Concerto for All by Myself. So he turned Rachmaninoff's melodies into pop songs twice!

In Moscow, Rachmaninoff was so busy with conducting and social life that he could not focus on composing. So in 1906 he moved with his family to Dresden in Germany and wrote this symphony in a quiet place. Other works born during his Dresden years include his First Piano Sonata and the symphonic poem Isle of the Dead.

Because this symphony is long, in the first half of the 20th century parts of it were often cut in performance. In 1973, the conductor André Previn recorded the complete symphony without cuts with the London Symphony Orchestra, and its reputation grew. Today, complete performances are the norm.

The First Symphony failed at its premiere in 1897. The Second Symphony's premiere was a triumph in 1908, about 11 years later. The score of the First Symphony was never published in Rachmaninoff's lifetime. After his death, it was rebuilt from the orchestral parts that had survived, and it was performed again in 1945.
