The Great Gate of Kyiv is the grand finale of Pictures at an Exhibition, a piano suite written by Mussorgsky in 1874. Mussorgsky wrote the suite after visiting a memorial exhibition of works by his late friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann, turning the pictures into music. This piece is based on Hartmann's design for a great city gate. Heavy chords, a prayer-like hymn, ringing bells: it is a grand ending worthy of the whole suite.
Hartmann drew his design for a plan to build a gate in Kyiv to celebrate Tsar Alexander II's escape from an assassination attempt in 1866. It had a roof shaped like the helmet of an old Russian hero and a bell tower. But the plan was dropped, and the gate was never built. In his music, Mussorgsky proudly completed this gate that never existed.
The 'Promenade' melody, the walking theme that appears throughout the suite, also returns grandly in this piece, announcing the end of the journey through the exhibition. Pictures at an Exhibition was not published in Mussorgsky's lifetime. It came out in 1886, after his death. When Ravel arranged it for orchestra in 1922, it became famous worldwide, and today both the piano and orchestral versions are loved.
This is the last part of Pictures at an Exhibition. It is about a big gate in the city of Kyiv. But the gate was never built! You can hear big bells in the music. It is grand and powerful.

In the middle of the piece, the music suddenly becomes quiet, and a prayer-like song appears. It is said to be based on a hymn of the Russian Orthodox Church. As the heavy gate theme and the quiet prayer take turns, you can almost picture people praying in front of the gate.
In the second half, low and high notes on the piano are combined to show many bells, big and small, ringing out. Perhaps this is because the gate design had a bell tower. In Ravel's orchestral version, real bells (tubular bells) and a tam-tam join in, making it even more powerful.
Pictures at an Exhibition has been reborn many times outside classical music. In 1971, the British rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer released a rock version. In 1975, Isao Tomita of Japan made a synthesizer version. In both, the final Great Gate of Kyiv is a major highlight.
It is said that Mussorgsky wrote the whole of Pictures at an Exhibition in only about three weeks in June 1874. In a letter to a friend, he wrote that sounds and ideas were coming so fast that he could hardly get them down on paper. The grief of losing his friend turned into a great burst of creative energy.
