Violin Concerto No. 3 was written in Salzburg in 1775, when Mozart was 19. That year he wrote several violin concertos one after another, and many people feel that from No. 3 on, the music becomes much richer and the exchange between the violin and the orchestra comes alive. Mozart was also the concertmaster of the Salzburg court orchestra.
The theme of the first movement comes from an aria in Il re pastore (The Shepherd King), an opera Mozart wrote the same year. In the second movement, Adagio, flutes replace the oboes, and the violin sings a long, dreamy melody. Of his five violin concertos, this is the only movement that uses flutes.
The last movement is a rondo. In the middle, the tempo and meter suddenly change, and a folk-like melody appears. In a letter of 1777, Mozart called one of his concertos the 'Strassburg Concerto,' and it is thought to mean No. 3, named after this dance tune, although some think he meant No. 4.
Mozart wrote this concerto when he was 19. He was a very good violin player, too. The violin sings a long, dreamy song in the slow part. In the last part, a surprise folk dance tune appears!

In 1777, while Mozart was traveling, his father Leopold wrote to him that he had no idea how well he played the violin, and that he should play boldly, with spirit and fire, as if he were the finest violinist in Europe. Mozart was an accomplished violinist as well as a pianist.
The first movement's theme is taken from an aria in Mozart's opera Il re pastore, performed in Salzburg in the same year, 1775. A melody made for singing became a song for the violin. It is a concerto full of the singing spirit of Mozart the opera composer.
In a letter of 1777, Mozart called one of his concertos the 'Strassburg Concerto.' This is thought to be because the dance tune in the middle of the third movement was known as a 'Strassburg' tune. But some think he meant No. 4, and the question is not settled.
Of Mozart's five violin concertos, only the second movement of No. 3 uses flutes. It is thought that the oboe players may have switched to flutes. The soft sound of the flutes gently wraps around the violin's dreamy song.
